Averett University (AU)

Black Pinpoint 420 West Main Street ATTN: Admissions | Danville, VA | 24541

01. Overview

What the school is known for:

In Danville, Virginia, just north of the North Carolina border, Averett University offers students specialized degree programs, like aviation, equine business management, and sports management, in "a home away from home" setting. A "low student-to-teacher ratio" means that students get more attention, and in particular "there is more personalized help available to students who may be struggling in their academics." Students say that "while classes can be difficult, they are manageable" and the "professors are always available to help you out and explain an assignment in more detail." Averett faculty members "are friendly and motivate students in and out of the classroom," putting "a lot of their personal time and effort into helping students succeed." In fact, academic tutoring is available "for free to those struggling [in] classes." Many report a great level of satisfaction with coursework in their area of study, but some express frustration with professors, who "did not make a class challenging enough."

06. Student Body

What students say:

Students agree that the Averett University student body is geographically diverse with "a lot of students from different countries and a lot of commuters." The typical student is "between their late teens and early twenties, predominantly either African-American or Caucasian." "Everyone is friendly" here, which fits perfectly with the "very small" campus environment. Some describe the average student as "extremely conservative," and most agree that "everyone accepts anyone for who they are and what they believe in." As a result "each student is seen as a part of the Averett family, and no one is left out because of their religion, race, sexuality, disabilities, etc." Some commuter students complain that, while "pretty much everyone is approachable and helpful, [. . .] it's hard to make really good friends with these people." Sports are popular on campus: "Most students come to be a part of the athletics department or join a sport while at Averett." Some undergrads point to a minority of students who are "pretty immature" or "unprofessional" and view their education "as a means to an end and by large are perfunctory in their approach to it." Otherwise, Averett students are glad to belong to "one giant family."

08. Campus Life

What students say:

Campus life at Averett strikes a "balance between school and athletics." On campus, Averett offers "loads of activities like movie nights, cute crafts, and things like laser tag and corn hole from time to time. There's also ping pong and pool tables." A Baptist-affiliated university, Averett is a dry campus. A student explains, "If there's an off-campus party, we'll drink, but otherwise it's all very quiet." For outdoors enthusiasts "there is a lake near Averett and a mountain a little farther south" where students will spend the day swimming or hiking. In this small, close-knit community, students notice that gossip travels on "a high-speed and very short grapevine [. . .] and keeping secrets from anyone about anything borders on impossible." Commuters sometimes feel left out in the cold. "Whereas dorm students have events every few days," one commuter student tells us, "they make nothing for the commuter students to do, event-wise."
