Founded in 1770, the College of Charleston is a public liberal arts institution "focused on educating its students to be well-rounded intellectual citizens." With 150 undergraduate majors and minors offered, there are a "wide variety of classes and programs" available, ensuring that "there's something here for almost everyone." Historic, "beautiful" downtown Charleston doubles as "a unique experience to enjoy and learn from the outdoors while still in an academic setting" and comes with "lots of fieldwork." That is matched by the "incredible experience and education" professors offer, many of whom "have very interesting and unique backgrounds that help engage students and relate to the real world." Specifically, they "do a great job of helping students network and gain experience before graduation through internships and on-campus work." It's also well-received that "small class sizes make it easy to ask questions and participate in class," and there's the sense that faculty are "invested in each student's learning process, encouraging students to ask them for help if they need it, or to simply stop by during office hours if they want to discuss something." As one student puts it, Charleston helps "you to have a plan and be ready for anything the future can throw at you...and they have the resources to back up these goals."

Cougars are known for being a "fun, outgoing, [and] involved community" where "everyone is really friendly." On campus, "camaraderie is evident, and morale is high." The "unique and thriving atmosphere that surrounds the college draws many different types of people." There is "a wide variety of backgrounds and personalities of students here," which many appreciate because it "allows students to gain perspective and insight as to how others think and feel." One student adds that "MOST students are respectful of others' opinions and beliefs." Students also engage across different majors: "We all mingle together and are friends with people in all different fields of study." And one student shares, "The one thing I love most about the College of Charleston is how we can all come together and co-exist." Another student agrees, "Anyone and everyone can find someone to be friends with and fit in with here."

Students at the College of Charleston "are extremely involved...and likely participate in multiple clubs," not to mention "volunteering events, jobs, internships, and study abroad trips." The school hosts "tons of talks and activities" and "constantly keeps us updated on events and opportunities." With more than 240 options, students say that "there are so many clubs to choose from," including the "Belly Dance club," the Esports club, and the Cheese Club (exactly what it sounds like). They also "love going to school sporting events (especially basketball)," and Greek life is singled out as being "really fun...because it is so low-key compared to other colleges." On the weekends, students might step off campus into the "vibrant city" of Charleston, where "there is always something happening, whether it be the Fall Arts Festival, an a cappella concert, or a concert." The college enjoys an excellent relationship with its community, and "many local coffee shops are also "frequented by students and provide a nice place to hang out with friends or study." Geographically speaking, proximity to the water "is icing on the cake," so students "do a lot of beach-going (Charleston is close to several beaches)," and one student's weekend rotation involves "Hitting the bars on Friday night, going to the farmer's market then beach on Saturdays, while still having energy to study hard [on] Sunday nights." Another student claims, "The great thing about our college is that there is so much going on around here on any given day."
