01. What the School is Known For
From the School
Founded in 1880 by Charles Wesley Emerson, Emerson College is an independent, nondenominational college in Boston, Massachusetts, that enrolls approximately 6,000 undergraduate and graduate students from 50 states and several dozen countries. As the world's only college dedicated to the constant evolution of expression, our work innovates communication, media, and the arts.
At Emerson, our students learn how to advance the ways humans connect and communicate every day. We have long been a pioneer in education focused on communication and the arts. We were one of the first colleges in the nation to establish a program in children's theater (1919) and one of the first to offer undergraduate programs in broadcasting (1937). We were also the first New England college to establish an educational FM radio station (WERS in 1949). In 2016, we became the first in the country to offer a Bachelor of Fine Arts program in Comedic Arts.
Emerson is a powerful career catalyst. Our 58,000+ alumni live in 100+ countries and have built extraordinary careers in myriad industries, including publishing, media, business, entertainment, sports, politics, and healthcare. They are New York Times—bestselling authors, general managers of NBA teams, Tony-winning actors, Oscar-winning directors, accomplished journalists, and comedy legends.

From The School
Emerson's 4,100+ undergraduate students come from all 50 states and several dozen countries. Our Boston campus is always active and lively, thanks to the more than 100 registered student organizations and activities. Most of our students join multiple orgs, because they understand that connection and collaboration with their peers lead to greater impact and more innovative work.
The College also offers approximately 20 co-curricular activities that range from assisting faculty with research to participating in publication and film production student organizations. Other options for student involvement include fraternity and sorority life and honorary societies.
About 200 students participate in our 14 NCAA Division III sports: baseball, basketball, cross-country, lacrosse, soccer, softball, tennis, and volleyball. We also offer intramural and recreational sports and fitness programs.
What students say:
The student body is described as "small, open-minded, artsy, but with a distinct studentathlete crowd." Emerson students "usually enter the school with a career already in mind" with some having "prior experience." It is "rare to find people who are undeclared." Students describe Emerson as "an art school without the label," attracting "creative forces" who are "ambitious, driven, and self-starters." Students "can be a little pretentious and business oriented" and "casual conversations can sometimes feel like a networking event." Yet others stress that their "peers are collaborative and kind," with most "extremely kind and willing to work with each other." Everybody is generally "open to new ideas and perspectives, very accepting and friendly," and "all very committed to their art." One student comments on diversity: "It's a diverse campus in sexual and gender identity, however, racial diversity is limited. There's a range of interests, but the majority of students at Emerson are here to study some aspect of film, and so life is somewhat dominated by that." The campus tends to be "pro-social justice," with a "great activism community" that is "highly involved in Black Lives Matter," "climate change," and other hot-button political issues.

Admissions
From the School:
Students applying for undergraduate admission do so through the Common Application or the Emerson Application. The following supporting academic credentials are required: a high school transcript and school report, a secondary school counselor evaluation, a teacher evaluation, and a first marking period grades and midyear report. Emerson is test optional; students who feel that their standardized test scores do not effectively demonstrate their ability to succeed within the college environment may forgo submission. Students who feel that their standardized test scores will be beneficial to the review process are encouraged to submit their scores.
There are three options for undergraduate applications: (1) Early Decision (ED) is a binding early deadline. This option is appropriate only for students who have decided that Emerson is their first choice. (2) Early Action (EA) is a non-binding early deadline. (3) Regular Decision (RD) is a non-binding deadline.

What students say
Emerson College boasts its "urban" Boston location as a solid locus for "networking and career-preparation," including the "amazing alumni network," lovingly referred to as the "Emerson Mafia." In particular, "journalism, writing, film, marketing, and theater programs" are especially "strong," and classes are "taught by industry professionals" who "never fail to enlighten." Most of the classes are focused on job readiness: "You do work with actual organizations rather than discuss theories." There are "impressive" facilities and resources, including "film and TV studio facilities and equipment" with broad "availability to students," and "small class sizes with easy-to-reach professors, specific course material, and no meaningless busy work," that "often work more like collaborations than lectures." "We aren't test takers at Emerson," one student says, "so we don't study. We create projects, videos, presentations, [and so on]." Professors are "passionate about the learning material," and "are in constant discourse with the class," "keen on showcasing global perspectives." Emerson stresses "hands on activities, volunteer opportunities, real-time demonstrations, and frequent class discussions," and classes "integrated with external organizations," means students are often out in the community, "working with local nonprofits," or navigating "creative opportunities through internships in the Boston area." Emerson offers a "wealth of resources" on campus, including the "ArtsEmerson productions," "Bright Lights Film series," "Emerson Channel," and the "EVVY Award" give "media creators" all the immersive experience they need to prepare for post-college professions. The study abroad trips are "phenomenal," with students raving about trips to Cuba, Colombia, and the Netherlands.

Campus Facilities & Equipment
Guided by outstanding faculty, our students use their imagination, originality, and hustle to bring extraordinary stories to life. From day one, they work and learn in our state-of-the-art labs, studios, and performance venues.
The College owns more performance space than any other institution in Boston—six historic theaters and intimate black boxes. Other theatre facilities include rehearsal studios and specialized practice rooms, a costume shop, a design technology and makeup suite, and a theatre design and technology studio.
Emerson's cutting-edge film and television facilities include digital production and post-production labs, mix rooms, a sound stage, and a screening room. We are one of the first higher education institutions to use Unreal Engine's extended reality (XR) technology in our LED virtual production studio.
Journalism and School of Film, Television, and Media Arts students learn their craft using our inventory of 700 digital cameras, 50+ 16mm cameras, and other professional equipment. Recently, we acquired five ARRI Alexa 35 cameras and became the first film school in New England to earn Certified Film School accreditation through ARRI, a leading developer of film equipment and technology.
Our other cutting-edge facilities include: a writing and publishing lab; a focus group room; an on-campus clinic for the treatment of communication disorders; and a journalism production center with a newsroom, multimedia suite, and post-production editing suites.
The newest addition to campus is Griff's Game Room, a space created exclusively for students to relax and connect. Opened in 2026, it offers board and classic arcade games, pool, air hockey, and foosball. We also opened our renovated Fitness Center in 2024. The 13,000-square-foot facility has a wide range of treadmills, cross-trainers, half-racks, indoor cycling bikes, and dumbbell areas.
Off-Campus Opportunities
Located in the heart of Boston, Emerson's urban campus allows easy access to all that the city has to offer. In a metropolitan area with more than 150,000 college and university students, we enhance Boston's reputation as one of the best college towns in the U.S.
Our main campus borders Boston Common—the nation's oldest park—and is located in the vibrant Theatre District, offering students the opportunity to attend performances in magnificent venues, including our very own Cutler Majestic Theatre, Emerson Colonial Theatre, and Paramount Center. Students also live and learn within walking distance of a variety of internship and job sites, including global news organizations, research institutions, state and local government offices, advertising agencies, publishing companies, and nonprofits.
With campuses in Los Angeles and Europe, the College provides students with an academic and experiential experience like no other. For 40 years, we have offered a semester-long internship program in Los Angeles, during which students take classes in the heart of Hollywood and intern at a site related to their field of study. They start building a professional network through engagements with industry leaders both on and off campus—often leading to job opportunities after graduation—and make a positive impact on the Greater Los Angeles area through volunteer work and outreach.
The study abroad program at our 14th-century castle in Well, the Netherlands, is also celebrating its 40th anniversary. At Kasteel Well, students spend a semester learning about cross-cultural communication firsthand and studying a variety of subjects in the liberal arts, including: world history, journalism, foreign languages, European literature, and travel writing.
Our Global Pathways Programs give students the chance to spend a summer or an intersession in dynamic and historic locations such as Argentina, Australia, the Czech Republic, Greece, Italy, and Sweden.
What students say:
Students report that while Boston gives them everything they can hope for in terms of entertainment and culture, the on-campus extracurricular activities at Emerson "are innumerable and invaluable." Emerson provides "enough resources that you can do pretty much anything you want to do": clubs are "largely student run and provide a good amount of field experience for whatever it is you want to do." The campus is located "right on the Boston Common," so students enjoy "taking walks," visiting museums, many with "free entry," and trying out "lots of good food." Many students "work part-time" in the city, and otherwise students "hang out in the common rooms," "spend time working with a number of student organizations," exploring "wonderful Common Park," which is located close to campus. Other students like "watching NCAA games" or "attending interesting plays at the Emerson theatre." "Emerson students are known to overcommit themselves to activities," says one student. Another says, "It is not unusual to hear of students working on...several different shows and organizations while always taking challenging courses. Students, however, rarely complain that this affects the "quality of their lives or academic experience."
