01. What the School is Known For

From the School

At the Games Academy, we don't just teach game development—we make real games, every day. You'll leave with an impressive portfolio, hands-on experience, and the skills to shape the future of gaming.

Ranked No.1 for Games Design in England (91³Ô¹Ï, 2025) and a Top Creative School (The Rookies, 2024), Falmouth University's Games Academy is the place where creativity meets cutting-edge technology.

From day one, you'll work in multi-disciplinary teams, mirroring real-world game development studios. Whether you specialize in animation, game art, audio, design, programming, writing or production, you'll collaborate with peers from across our games degrees and beyond—working alongside actors, musicians, costume designers, filmmakers, and business experts from the wider University to create innovative and original games.

Throughout your studies, you'll work through multiple full development cycles, gaining hands-on experience in designing, producing and launching games. By the time you graduate, you'll have contributed to fully functional games, developing the technical expertise, problem-solving skills, and teamwork essential for success in the industry. Our focus on Agile development ensures you gain practical experience with industry-standard workflows, version control, and iterative design.

Industry-Standard Facilities

Our students work in one of the largest purpose-built game development suites of any UK university—an open-plan space with 300 development desks, designed to function like an indie game studio. This collaborative environment allows students to work across disciplines, simulating professional development teams. You'll have access to a range of industry-standard tools, engines, and software, including Unreal Engine, Unity, Ren'Py, and GameMaker, ensuring you graduate with adaptable, in-demand skills.

Career Focused

We are an Unreal Academic Partner, a GitHub Education affiliate, and a member of the British Computer Society, placing our students at the heart of the industry. Guest speakers, industry mentors, and an industry advisory panel provide real-world insights, ensuring our curriculum remains cutting-edge. Aardvark Swift, a specialist games recruitment consultant, is embedded into our professional practice course, helping students craft standout portfolios and career strategies. Our graduates have gone on to work at Rare, Supermassive, Creative Assembly, Respawn, Rockstar, and Firesprite, while others have founded their own studios.

Incubator for Startups

Falmouth University is a leader in fostering entrepreneurship—over 20% of our graduates start their own businesses. Our games incubator provides structured support for student-led studios, helping teams secure funding and publishing deals. Recent successes include:

  • Knights of Borria, whose debut title Leximan was published by Marvelous Europe and received great reviews on Metacritic
  • Ludophoria, an indie studio self-publishing Arm of Satan, a difficult co-op 2D platformer
  • Studio 316, which has collaborated with Eden Project and recently launched Tip Top Table Tennis on Nintendo Switch

Utilising Emerging Technologies

The Games Academy is at the forefront of emerging creative technologies. From social robotics to game streaming production, our research explores new possibilities in game design and immersive experiences. Our Robotics BSc includes hands-on work with an Epson robot arm and small-scale social robots, ensuring our graduates are prepared for the future of game development and interactive technology.

Real-World Experience

Students can take a professional placement year or study abroad, gaining global industry insights and bringing fresh perspectives back to their final-year projects. In the final years of undergraduate study, students replace the traditional dissertation with a game project—developing, pitching, and launching a fully functional game on itch.io. At the Games Academy — based in Falmouth University — students create real games and digital products every day, working in multi-disciplinary teams that reflect real-world game development studios. Whether specialising in animation, art, audio, design, programming, writing, or production, students collaborate across disciplines—including with actors, musicians, and business experts—to build innovative games.

Throughout the course, students develop, pitch, and launch multiple games, gaining hands-on experience in Agile development, version control, and iterative design. By graduation, they will have contributed to at least three fully functional games, equipping them with the skills, teamwork, and industry insight needed for success.

Students learn in one of the UK's largest game development studio spaces, featuring 300 development desks, industry-standard software and game engines (Unreal Engine, Unity, Ren'Py), and emerging technologies like motion capture and robotics.

We are an Unreal Academic Partner and work with Aardvark Swift to support graduate employability. Alumni have joined leading studios including Rare, Rockstar, and Creative Assembly, while others have launched successful startups such as Knights of Borria and Studio 316.

Ranked No.1 in England for Games Design (91³Ô¹Ï, 2024), the Games Academy offers an entrepreneurial, industry-focused education where students build careers from day one.

There aren't many universities with golden beaches only a few minutes' walk from the campus, and from coastal walks to sea swimming, paddleboarding, surfing or something more adrenaline fueled, there's no shortage of things to do.

Famous for its artistic and cultural heritage, Cornwall offers plenty for creative inspiration, from the Tate St Ives, to the Eden Project.

Off-Campus Opportunities

Our location offers a student life like no other. Our energetic, creative towns of Falmouth and Penryn offer a rich amazing cultural and social scene, with some of the UK's most stunning natural landscapes right on the doorstep.

Consistently rated as one of the best places to live in the UK by the Sunday Times, Falmouth offers something for everyone, all year round.

Falmouth offers a buzzing nightlife, with the high street full of lively bars and venues hosting live music, open mic sessions and club nights. Our region of Cornwall is known for its festival calendar, from major events like Boardmasters, to the iconic Sea Shanty Festival and foodie festivals that draw big crowds.

For those who relish the outdoors, Falmouth and the wider Cornish landscape provides boundless opportunities.

With a rich industrial history, Cornwall is now at the forefront of the future-economy, where new initiatives in space, rare earth minerals and renewable energy are flourishing.

A thriving digital and tech sector is providing exciting opportunities, not only in the region but further afield, as Cornwall's globally connected businesses expand and grow.

We are well connected for travel across the UK and beyond. Cornwall airport Newquay provides a handy link to major UK cities including a daily connection to London. There are frequent trains between our campuses, to the city of Truro and out of county to London and the UK's other major cities.
