01. What the School is Known For

From the School

Emerging as one of New York's most dynamic universities, Iona University is a caring academic community grounded in the values of Blessed Edmund Rice and the Christian Brothers. With a mission focused on opportunity, justice, and the transformative power of education, Iona inspires students to explore their passions, expand their perspectives, and chart their own paths forward. The university's close-knit community spans campuses in New Rochelle and Bronxville, both just 20 miles from the heart of New York City.

In recent years, Iona has seen remarkable growth. Since expanding to a second campus in Bronxville, the university has launched a premier school of health sciences in partnership with NewYork-Presbyterian, one of the nation's top hospitals. This collaboration, along with a range of academic and extracurricular programs, has helped drive an over 40% increase in new-student enrollment since 2019.

Achieving university status in 2022 was a milestone in Iona's growth and the momentum continues. In May 2024, the university opened a new campus in County Mayo, Ireland, at the historic Westport House Estate. This expansion connects Iona to its Irish roots while offering students exciting new academic and cultural opportunities abroad.

With a commitment to excellence and a vibrant campus culture, Iona is building a future where opportunity, innovation, and community combine.

Welcome to Iona University!
With a total enrollment of nearly 4,000 students and an alumni base of over 50,000 around the world, Iona is a diverse community of learners and scholars. Founded in 1940, Iona is inspired by the legacy of Blessed Edmund Rice and the Christian Brothers, embodying opportunity, justice, and the liberating power of education. Building upon that mission, 99 percent of Iona freshmen are awarded merit scholarships and/or financial aid to help cultivate their talents while providing access to an affordable education.

Academic Excellence
Reflecting the momentum, Iona has once again been named to prestigious national lists highlighting the success students have both on campus and beyond. Most recently for 2025, Iona has been recognized by 91³Ô¹Ï, The Wall Street Journal, Forbes and others as one of the nation's best colleges. Additionally, Georgetown University's Center on Education and the Workforce (CEW) ranks an Iona degree in the top 5 percent nationally for long-term return on investment, reflecting the earning power of an Iona education.

Iona is also highly accredited, offering both undergraduate bachelor's degrees as well as master's degrees in the liberal arts, sciences, and business administration. Iona students can expect small class sizes, engaged professors and a wide range of academic programs within the School of Arts & Science, LaPenta School of Business, NewYork-Presbyterian Iona School of Health Sciences, and Hynes Institute for Entrepreneurship & Innovation. Iona's LaPenta School of Business is accredited by AACSB International, a prestigious recognition awarded to just 6 percent of business schools worldwide.

Best of Both Worlds
Iona's beautiful 45-acre campus in New Rochelle, N.Y., is only two miles from the Long Island Sound and 20 miles north of Midtown Manhattan. It offers a safe, engaged, and welcoming community with plenty to do, including theaters, parks, beaches, dining, nightlife, cultural activities, and more. Plus, you can hop on the Metro-North train and take a short ride to the heart of New York City! In addition, Iona's campus in Bronxville, N.Y., just three miles from Iona's New Rochelle campus, adds a cutting-edge school of health sciences as well as additional athletic fields and performance spaces for student activities.

It Pays to Go to Iona
Did you know that 94 percent of Iona graduates are employed full-time or enrolled in graduate school within six months of graduation? Our graduates land jobs at renowned companies and go on to serve in leadership positions throughout their careers. That's one reason why Georgetown University's Center on Education and Workforce (CEW) ranked Iona in the top 5 percent nationally for return on investment. Iona also ranked in the top 18 percent of PayScale's top universities in nation for a bachelor's degree. Furthermore, Iona is included in Money's 2023 list of the Best Colleges in America, which combines quality and affordability.

Active Campus Life
Iona ranked in the Top 25 for student experience in The Wall Street Journal's 2025 Best Colleges in the U.S. Iona's vibrant, friendly campus offers endless ways to get involved, including performances, athletics, game nights, ministry organizations, and a thriving Greek life. Iona is a Division I athletics program with 24 varsity sports. Iona also competes on a club sports level with 16 new teams, including a championship esports team. In addition, Iona has created a second-to-none performing arts program for all students, regardless of major. Join one of our 80 active clubs, student groups, and organizations, or start your own to stay involved!

Mentorships & Internships
As a Gael, you are never alone on your journey. The Gaels Go Further Mentoring Program helps advance your personal and professional goals by providing access to Iona's network of more than 50,000 alumni across a wide range of industries. Iona's proximity to New York City also provides incredible opportunities for internships at some of the most impactful, innovative, and important businesses in the world.

Residential Life
Iona offers a variety of on-campus housing, including residence halls, suite-style housing, and apartments. All are equipped with access to cable, Wi-Fi, AC, laundry rooms, and lounges, and they're secured by a card access system, with extra security staffing at night.

What students say:

At Iona University, "respect and dignity are always a priority," so it's no surprise that undergrads speak very highly of their "warm and welcoming" peers. They see each other as "passionate, involved" individuals who are quick to "flash you a smile or hold open the door for you." One student elaborates, "I've met some of my best friends through asking a friendly face for help in many different areas at Iona. You are rarely judged and people genuinely want what's best for you." As another puts it, "The second I walked onto campus everyone made me feel like I belonged." Enrollees also note that the Catholic university attracts a "diverse range of students from different religious backgrounds" and "a lot of people from all over the world. [It] is nice to know that I can always learn something new about a different country." To those at Iona, the most important factor is how they join together to "care about their community and making a difference in the world." Beliefs like that are what lead some students to say their already impressive peers "are going to go far beyond what they expected."

From the School:

Once you've decided Iona is the place for you, it's time to apply. Both freshmen and transfer students are encouraged to apply using the Common Application, which opens August 1. Innovative thinking and a commitment to service underscore our academically rigorous programs across every discipline. You'll be encouraged to think critically and independently. You'll gain knowledge to better yourself and better the world. No matter what you study, you'll be challenged and supported. You'll step outside your comfort zone, but you'll never be alone. Your Iona experience will be uniquely yours, but you'll also be part of a close-knit community of Gaels who are here to support you on your journey.

Iona offers an exciting range of undergraduate and graduate programs within the School of Arts & Science, LaPenta School of Business and the NewYork-Presbyterian Iona School of Health Sciences. In addition, the Hynes Institute for Entrepreneurship & Innovation also offers degree programs and is available to all students across academic disciplines.

What students say

From their first to final year at Iona University, students are welcomed into an "inclusive community" that some say has "the feeling of home." Undergraduates appreciate that the school has "a lot of resources available" and "a huge network of support that will allow you to pursue your dreams." They also note that there are "opportunities for internships and job offers since the school works so hard to have companies come in and talk with the students," and that being "so close to the city" helps.

When it comes to academics, undergrads are quick to note that "Iona is renowned for their business school," which gets students early access to real-world companies, doing things like creating "an integrated marketing communication plan. This allowed us to take what we learn in the classroom and apply it to the real world." On the entrepreneurial side, students speak of "being able to formulate our own business with our group members and actually sell the products we obtained and made and gave the money collected to a charity of our choosing!"

Regardless of major, students say that "higher-level courses are more discussion/project based and intro classes more lecture-based." Fortunately, no matter the class, "most of the professors here are passionate about the subject material they are teaching, which makes the classes easy to attend." Additionally, they "do an excellent job at preparing students for their intended field of study and providing a meaningful learning experience." Perhaps most importantly, it's evident that they "really care about their students. They will contact you if you are doing well or if you aren't doing well. They want to see you succeed at Iona."

Location

Iona's unique locations offer the best of both worlds. Iona's beautiful 45-acre campus in New Rochelle, N.Y., is only two miles from the Long Island Sound and 20 miles north of Midtown Manhattan. In addition, Iona's new second campus in Bronxville, which is just three miles from its main campus in New Rochelle, is now home to the NewYork-Presbyterian Iona School of Health Sciences. The new campus also adds additional athletic fields and performance spaces for student activities. Both the New Rochelle and Bronxville campuses provide a comfortable, intimate learning environment and are less than half an hour from the heart of New York City. Easy Metro-North train access to Manhattan with shuttle service to and from campus is also available.

Campus Facilities & Equipment

Iona University is a school on the rise and its facilities reflect its success. Most recently, Iona expanded to a second campus in nearby Bronxville, N.Y., which added additional learning spaces as well as athletic facilities to the University footprint. The campus is primarily home to the New York-Presbyterian Iona School of Health Sciences. The school's new flagship building — named The Kelly Center for Health Sciences — features 32,000 square feet of the most modern classrooms, simulation labs and amenities across three floors.

On its New Rochelle campus, meanwhile, Iona has also opened the new "Murphy Green," a vibrant green space in the heart of campus. Complete with benches, trees, stone walkways and a terrace area, the 30,000-square-foot space has quickly become the center of campus events, outdoor performances, classes and many other academic and recreational activities.

In 2020, Iona also cut the ribbon on a dramatically renovated and renamed LaPenta School of Business. Designed with an iconic blend of the original, brick facade and a sleek, glass addition, the new LaPenta School of Business doubled the building's academic space to more than 68,000 square feet, including modern classrooms and an expanded LaPenta-Lynch Trading Floor with 27 desktop computers, 16 Bloomberg Terminals and a live, wrap-around stock ticker.

In 2019, the Hynes Institute for Entrepreneurship & Innovation opened its brand new, 3,800-square-foot coworking and learning space. Founded in 2017, the Hynes Institute ensures that students develop the knowledge, skills and experience needed to create, innovate and lead in a global economy. In addition to hosting an annual business competition and running a business incubator on campus, the Hynes Institute also offers a Makerspace Experience where students can tinker, design, create and build prototypes for new ideas as they strive to solve real-world challenges. The Hynes Athletics Center was also dramatically upgraded in 2019 to enhance the game experience for both student-athletes and fans. There is seating around all four sides of the court, state-of-the-art LED scoreboards, improved lighting and sound, a new playing surface, and additional support for Iona's ESPN School Productions efforts.

Off-Campus Opportunities

The City of New Rochelle offers a safe, engaging and welcoming community with plenty to do, including theaters, parks, beaches, dining, nightlife and cultural activities. Students can also enjoy the picturesque Village of Bronxville, where a variety of coffee shops, farmer's markets and much more await. Plus, the Metro-North train is easily accessible to take a short ride to the heart of Manhattan. With New York City less than half an hour away, students have unlimited options for career development and internship opportunities.

What students say:

There's plenty of homework at Iona University, so on both the academic and recreational side, Iona looks to make sure "there is never a boring or dull moment here." You might see this play out in study spaces like the library's "Harry Potter themed room," or the school's daily activity hour, a dedicated period from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. that "allows students to take a break from school work, meet new people, and join in on an extracurricular activity." In general, student engagement services offer many clubs and programs-everything from rugby to criminal justice-that are not only "exciting and interactive [but that] bring the student body closer together." For those professionally motivated, students say of clubs in accounting and finance: "I love how they create opportunities...to network with alumni and participate in interesting career chats." And for those looking for a Greek community, there are "fun events" like "Greek week where there's kickball and lip sync [performances]." Of course, even with all these activities, students sometimes need a change of scenery. That's where they can capitalize on the university's "proximity to NYC to spend time in Manhattan to experience the Big Apple nightlife and cultural outlets."

01. Overview

From the School

At Iona, you'll build a strong educational foundation with the freedom to shape it around your interests, passions and career goals.
