01. Overview

What the school is known for:

Over the years, Kutztown University has developed a reputation as a place where students can receive a small school education at state-school prices. And while the prices aren't changing much ("It's really inexpensive!" students assure us), the size of the school is. Undergrads tell us that "Kutztown is expanding. The largest state-school residence hall in Pennsylvania opened here last fall...The academic side of campus is straying from the 'classroom' style buildings [the addition of] with lecture halls (capacity 175 per room)." Students tell us that "The growth of the school has definitely taken away its appeal," The situation isn't likely to change. For those who can abide the burgeoning population, Kutztown offers a number of appealing programs. Education programs are strong, as is the College of Visual and Performing Arts. Science and nursing programs are gaining strength, with students informing us that "Interestingly enough, the hard sciences at this 'liberal arts' school are very thorough and the programs prepare the students for great successes in their careers."

06. Student Body

What students say:

KU is home to "preppy teachers, laid-back students, and crazy art students" who "all get along because we respect each other and always learn something new about other people. It's more fun when everyone is different." Geographically, the campus is not so diverse; KU is "filled with students from the surrounding towns, and nearly everyone knows each other from their high school," although it should be noted that the school's location "near several urban centers" draws "rural, suburban and urban students equally, with the diversity and opportunities anticipated by this mixture of students." The school also has a substantial population of nontraditional students.

08. Campus Life

What students say:

Kutztown students are a studious and focused lot and "during the week it's [about] academics." Of course they also have their share of fun; the school sponsors a slate of activities including, "guest speakers, plays, concerts, comedians, movies, casino night, bingo, and other fun events." Additionally, "many students go to parties in town throughout the week." Fortunately, various organizations sponsor regular trips to New York City and Washington, D.C., and to professional sporting events in Philadelphia. Students with cars occasionally seek out fun in nearby Reading and Allentown. However, many students do tend to "go home on the weekends." One student explains, "KU is what they call a suitcase school. When it comes to 3:00 on Friday afternoon, there is traffic backed up throughout the entire campus."
