01. What the School is Known For

From the School

Established in 1969, Ramapo College is New Jersey's Public Liberal Arts College, dedicated to providing students a strong foundation for a lifetime of achievement and preparing them to be successful leaders for a changing world.

Ramapo College offers bachelor's degrees in the arts, business, humanities, social sciences and the sciences, as well as in professional studies, which include nursing, social work, and teacher certification at the elementary and secondary levels. Ramapo College also offers eight graduate programs, with four of the eight programs, having 4+1 accelerated completion options as well as articulated programs with other reputable institutions.

Ramapo College of New Jersey is sometimes mistaken for a private college. This is, in part, due to its unique interdisciplinary academic structure, its size of approximately 6,100 students and its pastoral setting in the foothills of the Ramapo Mountains on the New Jersey/New York border. Ramapo College students receive an elite education at the cost of a public college.

The College is committed to academic excellence through interdisciplinary and experiential learning, and international and intercultural understanding. The international mission is accomplished through a wide range of study abroad and student exchange links with institutions all over the world. Additional experiential programs include extensive internships, co-ops and service learning.

The College's interdisciplinary commitment helps students push intellectual boundaries; our commitment to experiential, hands-on learning allows students to push personal and professional boundaries as well. The devotion of our faculty to attentive teaching and mentoring empowers students to learn actively and attain the skills they will need to succeed professionally and to become lifelong learners.

Ramapo College is committed to maintaining strength and opportunity through diversity of age, race, gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity, and economic background among faculty, staff, and students. Barrier-free, the College maintains a continuing commitment to persons with disabilities.

From The School

At Ramapo College, student clubs and organizations are recognized as important parts of the total learning experience. Students are urged to take advantage of the many opportunities available that allows for learning experiences beyond class time.

There are more than 100 groups including cultural, academic, religious, recreational, entertainment, political, social and special interest groups. Clubs and organizations at Ramapo College are run by students under the general supervision of the Center for Student Involvement. Each group operates under its own constitution, according to the interests and enthusiasm of its membership. All welcome new members, new ideas and new directions. Many groups can provide valuable experience and connections to the job market.

Ramapo College offers intramural sports, club sports, 18 NCAA Division III sport teams, 30 honor societies, and 21 fraternities and sororities.

What students say:

The “welcoming and engaged†student body creates the feeling of a “home away from home.†It’s hard not to feel that way when surrounded by “supportive and positive students who want to learn and succeed†together. Plus, the inclusivity helps: “The college not only amplifies diversity with culture, but with race, age, and acceptance of the LGBTQ community.†So, while a majority of the campus hails from New Jersey and is predominantly white, there is still a noticeable variation in backgrounds socially, economically, politically, and academically. And everyone on campus “works hard to share their culture with others as well as to learn from others.†One student commenting on diversity goes so far as to say, “It is truly a role model school, and its achievements should serve as a basis for other universities and colleges.†As another puts it, with so “many types of people . . . it would be difficult to not find a group to hang out with.†Here you’ll find that “the people across any and all majors … are the strength of [the] school†and provide an “extremely accepting†community.

In addition, Ramapo College receives over 7,000 applications from all 21 counties in New Jersey, 33 different states and 34 foreign countries.

A complete application to Ramapo College includes:

  • Application (Apply at www.ramapo.edu/apply, www.commonapp.org, or at https://www.mycoalition.org/)
  • $65 application fee

  • Essay
  • Official SAT or ACT scores

The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is required of all international students and is recommended for all students who have resided in the United States fewer than four years.

Ramapo College practices a holistic review process. Each application is evaluated individually with emphasis placed on academic achievement in high school and standardized test scores, however, successful applicants also present a record of extracurricular activities that reflect maturity, responsibility and commitment.

Ramapo College seeks the very best students for its Educational Opportunity Fund (EOF) Program. If you qualify, you will join a community of achievers who are supported by a partnership between the College and EOF that is outstanding not only in financial assistance to cover your college cost, but also in personal and academic counseling, career planning, and leadership training. Your admission to the Ramapo College EOF program depends upon meeting financial eligibility requirements and academic standards.

The Ramapo College Honors Program is a community of faculty and students dedicated to intellectual, creative, and moral engagement. Honors students seek excellence through continual guidance and a distinctive curriculum of critical thinking, intercultural and international understanding, experiential learning, service, and interdisciplinary studies.

04. AcademicsScroll to Top  Scroll To Top Arrow

From the School

Undergraduate students can choose from more than 40 academic programs. Ramapo College boasts an average student/faculty ratio of 16:1 and average class size of 21, affording students the opportunity to develop close ties to the College's exceptional faculty.

95 percent of our faculty members hold terminal degrees in their field, allowing them to be excellent mentors to students inside and outside of the classroom.

Undergraduate students have the opportunity to engage in faculty-guided research, present papers at national conferences, and take advantage of over 200 different internship and co-op opportunities in nearby New York City companies and many more in New Jersey.

To strengthen the student's college background before concentrating on major courses for a degree, students are required to complete an all-college general education program consisting of courses in English, Mathematics, the Humanities, Social Sciences, and Natural Sciences.

All students are assigned an academic advisor during their first semester, allowing the choice of major to be made by the end of the sophomore year (with the exception of Nursing and Biology). There is ample time to explore several fields of interest before selecting a major.

What students say

Ramapo College of New Jersey is a public liberal arts school that not only features a stunning campus but also an engaging atmosphere where you can “really know each of your professors and peers.†Here, you’ll find a “challenging academic experience†combined with a “strong support system†that “fosters an incredible learning environment.†Among the multitude of programs offered, the most popular majors are business, nursing, and communications. But all courses across the board feature small class sizes led by professors who “are accessible and easy to talk to,†“strive to make the course content relatable,†and are “passionate about their field of study.†As such, they tend to “put more emphasis on actual learning [over] grades.†One student warns that the “workload is stressful,†but is quick to add that it’s “manageable if given a lot of dedication.†Plus, there are “great resources … [that help] students to succeed.†And the coursework is worth it, as it “gives students the opportunity to fully grasp all the information necessary in pursuing their career path.†On top of that, the road to career success is additionally paved by “a multitude of career fairs and internships [that are] always being offered to students,†leading to an overall academic experience described as “outstanding,†“amazing,†and “phenomenal.â€

Newer projects scheduled include the renovation of the George T. Potter Library, construction of a Learning Commons, and the construction of the Padovano Commons. A campus-wide photovoltaic installation project is underway.

Housing at Ramapo College offers students convenient, modern amenities within the eight residence halls on campus, including air conditioning, cable television, complimentary laundry, and semi-private bathrooms within each suite.

The campus features new and upgraded facilities that enhance all areas of campus life, including a library with electronic research facilities; a student life building with FM radio station, student offices, cafeteria, and entertainment and meeting rooms; housing for more than 3,000 students; and modern academic buildings with 24-hour computer labs.

Off-Campus Opportunities

Ramapo College encourages students to take advantage of experiences outside of the classroom, such as internships, co-ops, and study abroad opportunities.

Ramapo College has developed a diverse selection of more than 400 individual study-abroad program options in more than 60 countries. Opportunities exist for ALL majors and range from one-week to a full year.

Being only 32 miles away from New York City makes it easy for Ramapo College students to take advantage of internship opportunities with over 200 NYC companies and even more in New Jersey. Students in the past have completed a co-op or internship at companies like Google, Madison Square Garden, Yahoo!, BMW of North America, Deloitte, and Sony.

Students are able to purchase discounted bus tickets from Roadrunner Central and take a bus service that leaves from campus and takes them to The Port Authority of NY & NJ station in Manhattan. The College recently launched Ramapo Roadrunner Express, a new transit link - free service to and from the Westfield Garden State Plaza in Paramus with a stop at Bergen Community College. The new shuttle offers direct links to buses from many areas including Hackensack, Union City, Weehawken, Fort Lee, Paterson, Passaic, Clifton, Bloomfield, Rutherford and more (bus routes 709, 163, 770, 758).

What students say:

Ramapo College may be only thirty-two miles from New York City, but it boasts a scenic campus with “quite beautiful†mountain views. Dorms get high marks and the campus “architecture is breathtaking,†but the benefits extend beyond just those who live on campus too. There are “endless events offered to commuter and resident students†as well as “so many amazing activities—free of charge!†There’s trivia, karaoke, concerts, and sporting events, as well as a robust Greek life that draws many students. On the other hand, for those looking for time to themselves, there are “many quiet areas if you want to be alone to study.†In the warm weather, students can hike in the nearby nature reserve and many are found “sitting outside on the benches or in the grassy areas.†As for nightlife, slightly “restrictive†residence policies make house parties fairly uncommon, but those that do occur are “very low key and small in size.†Off-campus, those from all disciplines take advantage of the school’s proximity to New York City, taking day trips to The Whitney and Metropolitan Museum of Art. In sum, campus life is “very laid back most of the timeâ€; you “get your homework done and hang out with friendsâ€â€”however you choose to do that is up to you.

FAFSA

Because Ramapo College is a state institution, the cost of attending is affordable compared to many other institutions. About 77 76 percent of Ramapo's students receive some form of financial assistance, including grants and loans. Students may also be eligible for Federal work-study funding that allows a student to find a job on campus where they can earn money to help pay for school.

To apply for financial aid at Ramapo College, students should complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) by March 1. No other application forms are required. By complying with this priority deadline, students will be notified by April 1 about their expected aid package. The FAFSA is available after October 1 at www.fafsa.ed.gov. Applicants should use Ramapo's school code (009344) when filing.

Transfer students must initiate a school code change on the Student Aid Report (SAR) to ensure that their account will be appropriately credited. Students should begin this process at the time of application. Contact Ramapo's Financial Aid Office at (201)-684-7549 and finaid@ramapo.edu.

01. Overview

Admissions

From the School:

Every year, Ramapo College welcomes more than 1000 freshmen primarily from New Jersey, the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast regions of the United States and from many foreign countries.

  • Official high school transcripts
  • One letter of recommendation (two preferred)

Fall Application Deadlines:

Ramapo College offers binding Early Decision for students who know Ramapo College is their number one choice. Early Decision applicants must apply by November 1 and will receive their decision by December 5. Ramapo offers Early Action applicants must apply by December 15 and will receive their decision by February 1. Additionally Ramapo offers Regular Decision applicants must apply by February 1 and will receive their decision by March 1.

Students who are applying to the Nursing or Biology program must apply by December 15. The priority deadline for merit scholarship consideration for all majors is also December 15. The supporting documents and credential deadline (date by which Ramapo College must receive your documents, including transcript, test scores, recommendation letters, and EOF questionnaire, if applicable) is January 15.

The final deadline for all other majors outside of the Nursing and Biology program is February 1. All decisions for completed applications will be sent by March 1.

Scholarships:

Ramapo College offers scholarships that are merit based opportunities. This means they are offered to students based on their academic and personal achievements, not financial need. Students who apply by December 15 and submit all required credentials by January 3 and are in the top 10 percent of their high school class with SAT scores of at least a 1280 total or at least a 27 ACT score will be considered for a merit based scholarship.

Unfortunately, due to an increase in applications and limited funding, the College may be unable to offer every student that fits the above criteria a merit based scholarship.

Awards are continued for four years provided that students maintain the required number of credits and grade point average. No separate application is necessary.

Location

Ramapo College is spread across 300 acres, resting within the foothills of the Ramapo Mountains in Mahwah, New Jersey. Enhancing these tranquil surroundings is the knowledge that the campus is approximately 32 miles from the nation's cultural mecca, New York City.

Campus is located just five minutes from major highways such as I-287, the New York State Thruway, and Route 17, making it very easy to bring you right to Ramapo's doorstep.

Campus Facilities & Equipment

A campus-wide building program during recent years has resulted in the renovation of the G-wing building and completion of the Adler Center for Nursing Excellence, a central feature of the main entrance to the campus. The renovations include expanded classrooms, as well as, a research and simulation laboratory space. This thirty-six thousand square-foot facility is connected by an overhead walkway to the College's science/social science building.

Within the Anisfield School of Business academic facility is a real-time Global Financial Markets Trading Laboratory, which features 32 workstations, ticker displays inside and outside the lab, and 3 LCD television screens.

The Bill Bradley Sports and Recreation Center features a 2,200-seat arena, fitness center, 24 feet high Edelman climbing wall, as well as track and dance/aerobics studios.

The Angelica and Russ Berrie Center for Performing and Visual Arts houses performance theaters, art galleries and specialized spaces devoted to fine arts, computer art, photography, theater, dance and music.

The campus also boasts the Sharp Sustainability Education Center and the Salameno Spiritual Center.
