Admissions

From the School:

Rocky Mountain College of Art + Design selectively admits students who have a desire to explore new possibilities, work hard to realize their personal best, and who are eager to produce original, innovative works. Although a variety of evaluation criteria are necessary for a sound admission decision, evidence of potential in the college's fine and applied art disciplines is the primary consideration in the admissions process. RMCAD has a continuous enrollment process. Applications are reviewed for any up-coming semester upon receipt of all admissions materials. In order to provide optimal service, it is recommended students wait no longer than 1 month before the start of any term to begin the admission process. RMCAD accepts application paperwork, admits and accepts students and/or awards financial aid after the priority dates. Applicants are notified in writing of their acceptance as soon as the application requirements have been filled, with most decisions made within two weeks from the date all documents are received. Students with transfer credits from accredited colleges will receive a credit evaluation prior to scheduling. All admission decisions are binding. An appeal will be heard only if a student is able to introduce new information or material that has not already been reviewed in making the original decision. Acceptance alone does not secure enrollment in the College. Accepted students are required to sign an Intent to Enroll agreement and remit a non-refundable deposit of $150 in order to secure their place in the incoming class and be scheduled into classes. The $150 deposit will be applied toward the first semester tuition bill. Application Process for Domestic (U.S.) Students 1. Application for Admission Submit a completed Application for Admission and $50 application fee. You may also apply online via our website at www.rmcad.edu 2. Transcripts Official or unofficial high school transcripts or GED test scores should be sent directly to the Admissions Department. Transfer students must submit official transcripts from each college attended. Credit may not be awarded at a later date from colleges not listed on the application. Applicants who do not possess a cumulative grade point average of 2.0 or higher may be admitted with a provisional status. 3. Interview An interview with an Admissions Counselor, either in person or by telephone, is required. Through the personal interview, applicants will gain a better understanding of the visual arts education at Rocky Mountain College of Art + Design. To arrange an interview time, please contact the Admissions Office. 4. Portfolio We require both advanced students with extensive artistic training, as well as eager students who have had limited exposure to artistic training, to produce a portfolio. Students seeking admission to the Interior Design program do not need to submit a portfolio. Digital portfolio submissions are preferred, although photographs or slides are acceptable. Original work, except for sketchbooks, will not be accepted unless you receive special permission from your Admissions Counselor. You may also submit one sketchbook as evidence of your conceptual development. Time-based media such as video or computer animation on a CD-ROM or floppy disk may also be presented for consideration. 5. Standardized Test ScoresYou must take the SAT or ACT examination and have your test score sent to RMCAD either at the time you take the test, or a copy of your score can be included when you provide your transcripts. This requirement applies to first-time freshmen students only, not transfer students, returning students or students with a prior degree. Your score will be used for the purpose of academic counseling and placement, but it is not a factor in the admission decision. 6. Personal Statement All students must submit a personal statement, no longer than 1 page in length, which provides insight to your goals, interests, educational and artistic aspirations. Please send this with your Application for Admission form.

FOUNDATION STUDIES Each RMCAD student, regardless of major, is required to take approximately 21 credit hours of foundation coursework during their freshman and sophomore years. Students transferring to RMCAD who have studied basic art concepts at another school may receive credit for all or some of these credits. In Foundation Studies classes you'll get to build upon the skills you already have and experiment with everything that RMCAD offers. You'll expand your two-dimensional skills such as drawing, composition, and color theory and sharpen your three dimensional skills through sculpture, wood-shop projects, and structural design. Creative problem solving, computer skills and digital image making round out the Foundations curriculum. LIBERAL STUDIES At RMCAD we believe the liberal arts are the essential human context within which all art is made. Artists and designers who understand the essential ideas of civilization -the civilizations of history and of the times in which we live now -will have much to say in their chosen fields and in their own work.

ANIMATION (2D or 3D) Rocky Mountain College of Art + Design's animation program merges the arts of writing, storytelling, design, illustration, sculpture, theatre, photography and filmmaking with the technology of computers. The professional animators within the department teach students about the history of animation, current developments in animation and the future of animation. Since the field of animation is ever-changing, the departmental faculty continues to develop their own skills while helping to develop and nurture future generations of artists and animators. ART EDUCATION At RMCAD, art education is approached as a visual language. Students who earn a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Art Education are well prepared to motivate and inspire others to creatively think about and make art. The mission of the department is simple to give talented artists the skills necessary to be articulate and sensible art educators. Through rigorous coursework, classroom projects and class interaction, the program teaches artists how to accurately communicate ideas, experiences and events while emphasizing vision, creativity, innovation, leadership, conceptual thinking, and technical expertise. One unique aspect of RMCAD's Art Education program is that students must choose painting, illustration or sculpture as an area of specialization. By developing their skills both as artists and as teachers, RMCAD graduates are able to merge both kinds of expertise as they begin to teach elementary and secondary school students. FINE ARTS (Photo/Video, Painting & Drawing, Sculpture) Students in RMCAD's Fine Arts department can customize their course of study to fit their specific interests and career goals. Regardless of the specific set of courses they choose, all students in the Fine Arts program are challenged to expand their definition of art and develop the critical thinking skills that will help them be successful creating artwork in the context of the current art world. By studying the human form, drawing, and basic design concepts, students develop their visual and technical skills and leave RMCAD prepared to be important and successful members of the world-wide arts community. GRAPHIC DESIGN + INTERACTIVE MEDIA RMCAD's Graphic Design + Interactive Media program combines theory and practice to inspire students and help them discover their own individual design expression, while at the same time preparing them for today's new business environment. With the development of new technologies and interactive media, the global marketplace is changing the role of the contemporary designer. RMCAD recognizes and embraces this enormous potential by combining these technologies with a classical grounding in drawing, sociology, photography, theory, and form. This gives students a solid base for creating new ideas while maintaining a strong emphasis on process and content. ILLUSTRATION The RMCAD program provides advanced professional skills in representational drawing, painting, visual communication and business. These are the critical elements for success in the commercial field. No other college or university in the western states offers a full illustration program such as ours. Our student work is seen regularly in the Society of Illustrators Student Competition in New York City, where our program has been endorsed by the jury's stringent selection process. Furthermore, RMCAD's Illustration Department faculty is working artists, all experts in their field with many years of significant professional practice. INTERIOR DESIGN Rocky Mountain College of Art + Design's Interior Design program prepares students to be successful design professionals who are qualified to enhance the function and quality of interior environments. In accordance with the accreditation requirements of the Council for Interior Design Accreditation (CIDA), the curriculum is focused on the development of interior spaces for the purpose of improving the quality of life, increasing productivity, and protecting the health, safety, and welfare of the public.

Location

Is there a lot to do at RMCAD? The answer is simple yes! Many new RMCAD students jump right into the mix of activities everything from barbeques on the Quad to field trips to local galleries. Other RMCAD students spend their free time engrossed in their artwork. Most students strike a happy balance of both.

Campus Facilities & Equipment

After experiencing many years of growth at a location on the eastern side of the city, RMCAD moved in 2003 to its current location in Lakewood, a west-central suburb of Denver. RMCAD's 23-acre wooded campus combines modern approaches to learning in a historical setting. Our unique campus contains 13 buildings, all but two of which are on the National Historic Register.
