01. What the School is Known For

From the School

The mission of St. Lawrence University is to provide an inspiring and demanding undergraduate education in the liberal arts to students selected for their seriousness of purpose and intellectual promise.

Nestled in the small upstate New York town of Canton that’s closer to Canada than it is to Manhattan, St. Lawrence is a liberal arts school with a strong sense of community and a dedication to academics. For one history major, St. Lawrence is “a university that pushes me to pursue my dreams,” a place where “it felt like I was coming home, not leaving home.” With roughly 2,400 students and a student to faculty ratio of 12:1, St. Lawrence prides itself on small classes and a tight knit environment where students and professors know their fellow Laurentians by name. With interdisciplinary studies encouraged, the most popular majors at St. Lawrence include economics, biology, government, psychology, and mathematics. Even though its location might be considered remote, the school’s proximity to the Adirondacks is a huge draw and, as one anthropology major jokes, “St. Lawrence manages to be a place with countless opportunities and things going on despite being in the middle of nowhere.”

From The School

All first-year undergraduate students are enrolled in St. Lawrence University’s nationally-recognized First-Year Program, which places approximately 30 first-year students in small communities that live and learn together.

Once they achieve upper-class status, students may choose to live in traditional residence halls, interest-based theme suites, theme cottages, Greek houses, or senior townhouses.

St. Lawrence provides a full range of services to students, including comprehensive career planning as well as graduate and professional school guidance.

Students seeking co-curricular activities can choose from over 100 organizations, including everything from student government to interest groups, to arts and culture.

St. Lawrence boasts 34 intercollegiate teams including NCAA Division I teams in men's and women's ice hockey. All other teams compete in the NCAA's Division III. Club sports are also available, as is participation in a broad range of popular intramural sports.

What students say:

St. Lawrence students "wear many different hats and are involved in almost all aspects of the school community and culture," including the "large student-athlete population." Undergrads describe this society as "tight knit," such that "even if you don't know someone, you treat them as if you do," and they speak warmly of the "extremely positive and loving" atmosphere this creates. Peers are seen as "a welcoming family in which everybody can find friends," something that's only enhanced by "very low-key people who work very hard in the classroom as well as [at] athletics, but [who] treat it like it is no big deal." One student posits that it might be the cold of being so close to Canada, which "brings a level of closeness and different atmosphere," but based on responses, we think SLU just chooses warm students.

Admissions

From the School:

St. Lawrence seeks undergraduates with the capacity to manage a demanding academic regimen successfully. In addition, the ideal student contributes substantially to the quality of community life. The University strives to enroll students who represent the broadest possible range of economic, ethnic, geographic, and social backgrounds. The admissions committee values academic achievement, but ability in athletics, community service, leadership, or the creative arts is also considered a strong indicator of a student's capacity to benefit from her or his time at St. Lawrence. The University is test optional for all domestic students, so students may choose to submit the results of their SAT, ACT, both SAT and ACT, or none. Any submitted tests will be used during the evaluation process. Students are strongly encouraged to plan a campus visit; interviews may be scheduled to occur on campus. In certain areas, off-campus interviews are also an option.

The University makes no requirement of applicants' high school curricula; however, successful applicants generally demonstrate extensive preparation in the humanities, mathematics, the natural sciences, and the social sciences. Advanced Placement, IB and honors work are looked upon favorably, as they demonstrate the applicants’ intellectual curiosity and maturity. These are qualities that are highly sought by the admissions committee.

St. Lawrence uses the Common Application exclusively. The application processing fee is $60, which is waived with an official campus visit. Applicants pursuing regular decision should submit all materials by February 1 and will be notified in mid-March of the University’s decision. Students whose first choice is St. Lawrence may apply for early decision: the priority deadline for early decision applications begins on November 1 and goes until February 1. Notification of the early decision is sent approximately two weeks after the application folder is complete.

The St. Lawrence distribution requirements involve coursework in six areas. All students are expected to demonstrate writing competence before graduating. The University provides extensive opportunities for honors projects and independent work.

What students say

Nestled in the uppermost reaches of New York State on a scenic one-thousand-acre campus, St. Lawrence University is a vibrant liberal arts institution of around 2,060* undergraduates and a very long reach. The "alumni network is super active," students have "lots of opportunities for hands-on research" and nearly two-thirds of SLU undergrads study abroad. With more than 85 majors and minors to choose from, and the option to design one's own course of study in the multifield major program, there are "a plethora of options for one's academic path." Small class sizes-an average of 16 students in each-further focus those options, as enrollees note that they "feel more comfortable asking questions and having conversation," which "fosters learning." Adding to that comfort is a First-Year Program that helps with the transition to college and which is described as "a great way to bond" through living-learning communities in the dorms. The school also offers Community-Based Learning (CBL) courses that immerse students in the real world: "I am currently taking a CBL course at the local correctional facility that allows me to take a philosophy course in a classroom at the jail with ten SLU students and ten inmates as my classmates."

As for the staff, "I've never felt so supported and believed in." Students specifically note that the "compassion professors have for individual success is incredible," particularly in the way that they "know people have different styles of learning" and so "are responsive to questions and always try to make the class [as] interactive as possible." Their classes work "to deliver a well-rounded education and develop our interpersonal skills," and "a lot of the intro classes are very reasonable and give you the right amount of work." And for those interested, you can dive into research from your very first year: "I was offered an opportunity to study and train wildlife detection dogs with a focus on locating amphibians, all thanks to my professors." Overall, students suggest that "St. Lawrence is a place for students to explore past thinkers and ideas while also conversing with their peers to help them establish their own thoughts and views."

Location

St. Lawrence University provides a distinctive learning environment, offering 63 majors, 40 minors, and three graduate programs in education. Its First-Year Program has become a national model as a living-learning environment that transitions students successfully out of high school and into college life. Just 80 miles from Ottawa, St. Lawrence is the closest American university to a foreign capital and is only 100 miles from Montréal. St. Lawrence celebrates diversity in the widest sense, welcoming students from more than 60 countries. It also boasts the Collegiate Science and Technology Entry Program, the Ronald E. McNair Scholars Program, and is a partner with the New York State Higher Education Opportunity Program.

Campus Facilities & Equipment

St. Lawrence University has two libraries, the Owen D. Young Library and Launders Science Library, containing more than 630,000 print volumes as well as a number of electronic resources, a writing center, and ample space for reading and research.

Students also enjoy a performing arts center with recital hall and two theaters as well as an art gallery containing a 7,000-piece art collection and Newell Center for Arts Technology.

With a commitment to sustainability, St. Lawrence opened in 2007 the Johnson Hall of Science, which was the first LEED-gold certified science building in New York State. And in 2014, the University opened Kirk Douglas Hall, a 155-bed residence hall that features 24 geothermal heating/cooling wells and was built to LEED gold standards. There’s also the 15,000-square-foot Sullivan Student Center, which is available for student activities and meetings, studying, staff offices, and a popular dining facility.

Recreational facilities include a network of trails available for running and cross-country skiing; a 133-station fitness center; a three-story climbing wall; indoor and outdoor tennis courts; and two gymnasium/fieldhouse complexes, one with a 9-lane/400-meter track and five tennis/basketball courts and the other with a 200-meter track, three tennis courts, and ten squash courts. There’s also a pool, equestrian center, golf course, indoor golf facility, AstroTurf field, baseball, soccer and softball fields, and a boathouse for rowing teams located on the St. Lawrence River, Appleton Arena is home to St. Lawrence’s only NCAA Division I sport teams, men’s and women’s hockey teams.

Off-Campus Opportunities

St. Lawrence University offers 24 off-campus program sites in 19 countries, including Australia, Austria, Canada, China, Costa Rica, Czech Republic, Denmark, England, France, India, Italy, Japan, Kenya, New Zealand, Spain, Thailand, and Trinidad and Tobago. Students can also direct-enroll at foreign universities through the International Student Exchange Program (ISEP).

The University also offers four off-campus study programs within the United States at American University, Washington, D.C.; an exchange program with Fisk University, Nashville, Tennessee; the Liberal Arts in New York City, the Adirondack Semester, and a Sustainability Program located just 5 miles from campus.

What students say:

Ninety-nine percent of students live on this "walking campus" and "have the opportunity to live in theme houses or Greek houses, which support high-quality residential communities." There are over 150 clubs and organizations, and "skiing, hiking, rock climbing, and other outdoor activities are popular" among this nature-loving group. "The incredible outdoors that SLU has around us is [wonderful]," says a student. And while remote Canton "is a small and rural town" where "there is not a hopping night scene," students actually appreciate knowing "where everyone is going to be on a Saturday night." This means that "sports events are popular," as is "spend[ing] time in the student center to talk and grab coffee, go outside and sit in hammocks if the weather is permitting, and do homework in the library."

11. Career Services & JobsScroll to Top  Scroll To Top Arrow

What students say

St. Lawrence students are fortunate in that they can both tap into a “great alumni network” and take advantage of a stellar career services office. In fact, undergrads here make a point of mentioning that the office does “a good job with providing resources for students,” and it is one of the school’s “greatest strengths.” The SLU Connect initiative reinforces the idea of using the Laurentian alum network as a source of mentorship and industry insights and offers programs and events in locations ranging from Montana to Boston. The center centralizes resources, workshops, and events on Handshake, just one of the many ways it simplifies access to career development tools. As one impressed undergrad attests, “Sophomore year at St. Lawrence offers a career boot-camp [in which] a very large [number] of students participate. This career boot-camp made sure my resume, LinkedIn [profile], and networking skills were on point.” And best of all, “the career services advisers go out of their way to make sure as many students as possible are taking advantage of the panels, networking events and internships available.” Students visiting Payscale.com report a median starting salary of $66,200, with 55 percent noting high job meaning and satisfaction.

01. Overview

From the School

The University offers the following degrees: Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, Master of Education, Master of Science in Mental Health Counseling, and a Certificate of Advanced Studies in Education.

There are 63 majors, which include a number of combined major programs in areas such as environmental studies, economics and biology. Students can even design their own major with faculty approval. The University also offers 40 minors and 53 interdisciplinary programs (see Majors and Degrees Offered.)

St. Lawrence has a number of affiliations, giving students the opportunity to pursue a five-year program in business administration (this program leads to the MBA) and engineering, combining coursework at St. Lawrence with work at other institutions.

Students can also enter a number of affiliate programs leading to degrees in pharmacy, nursing, physician assistant, and physical therapy. There are also tracks for pre-med and pre-law.

Location
