01. What the School is Known For

From the School

At the University at Albany, you'll find top-ranked academic programs, immersive hands-on experiences and diverse perspectives, ready to help you unleash your potential and become the better-world builder you've always wanted to be.

UAlbany has a rich history dating back more than 180 years, starting as a "normal school" founded to train teachers. We evolved over time with new curricula and four-year programs, eventually transforming into a major public research university.

Today, the University at Albany is one of four University Centers in the State University of New York (SUNY) system. As a Research 1 institution dedicated to future-facing programing, we provide our 17,000 undergraduate and graduate students with ample opportunities to work alongside top-ranked faculty in scholarship and major research pursuits across a wide range of disciplines. In fact, at UAlbany interdisciplinary collaboration and research in the interest of the public good are common pursuits for most of our students.

While UAlbany offers the resources of a large university with Research 1 status, we're also known for our close-knit, nurturing community—a proven combination that helps our students be the author of their own success.

From The School

UAlbany students have more than 250 clubs and organizations to choose from, with a wide range of interests and affiliations represented. More than 60 of these are identity-based groups, and over 22 of them are identity-based Greek Life organizations or fraternities and sororities. Students will also find clubs focused on public service, religion, recreation, pre-professional interests, culture, arts, academics, media, politics and more.

And whether you are an athlete yourself or simply enjoy watching sports and cheering on fellow Great Danes, UAlbany has 19 NCAA Division I athletics teams, 30 Club Sports teams and over 20 Intramural Sports activities each year.

What students say:

"Diversity is not just respected but it is honored and appreciated" among the "inquisitive and hard-working" population of UAlbany, who find that it "enriches academic discourse, fosters cultural understanding, and prepares students for a globalized world." There are multiple resources for various student groups on campus, "like the women's resource center, the interfaith center, the multicultural resource center, and the gender and sexuality resource center," furthering an environment where "every individual has a safe space to truly express themselves to their fullest extent." If there's one understandably typical trait, it's that there are "a lot of people from all over the state of New York." Students are highly active and "spend time outside of class studying but always leave room for some fun"; you can "always see other students participating in bake sales, fundraisers, events, and displaying school spirit at sports games or in everyday campus life." On the whole, students present "a strong welcoming ambiance" and "there are always events going on hosted by students to engage with peers."

From the School

While UAlbany offers a variety of traditional bachelor's, master's and PhD programs, we also provide a range of other programs. Students interested in fields that require advanced study as part of the career path can enroll in pre-professional programs, including pre-law, pre-health and teacher preparation pathways. We also offer combined bachelor's and master's programs, in which students can complete both degrees in less time. For students looking to earn their degree remotely, we offer fully online degree programs, including nine bachelor's and over 45 graduate programs.

Interdisciplinary learning is a hallmark of UAlbany academics. Students at all levels can take part in learning and research in multiple disciplines that helps develop their critical thinking and prepares them for real-world challenges they will encounter in their future careers.

For highly motivated undergraduate students from any major, the Honors College offers the chance to allow their own curiosity to be a driving force in their learning and find answers to the questions that are important to them. These students develop their reasoning and analytical skills in small, interdisciplinary seminar courses and, in their final year, work with a mentor to design a unique project that makes a meaningful contribution to the world.

What students say

Students at the State University of New York-University at Albany have access to what they consider an "unmatched lineup of degree programs, world-class faculty, and amazing support." Of particular note is how well UAlbany communicates with students, from advisors who "are on top of students about registering and obtaining classes" to the "many different groups and support systems for all types of students." All of these teams-of both students and staff-"are dedicated to making sure everyone feels like they belong and has something to do or someplace to go that they enjoy."

Faculty use "methods that cause us to think outside the box" and offer up "personal stories and experiences [they] themselves have had, showing real time research they are working on and how it has made an impact, and what future careers you can hold with your interests." They offer "quick responses to issues regarding work, but a kind and empathetic approach during bad times." According to one student, they are "so passionate about their course material, which made learning exciting and interactive." The school's reputation and location and "the incredible networking and relations UAlbany has with hiring businesses...makes it relatively easy to get an internship or job after graduation." From start to finish, enrollees admire that "the school is about being there for the students."

Location

The University at Albany is located in the heart of New York State's capital region. We have three distinct campuses: the Uptown Campus, Downtown Campus and Health Sciences Campus.

The Uptown Campus is our main campus and hub of student activity, situated on more than 500 acres on the northwest edge of Albany. It has all the benefits of a suburban setting, like abundant green space and quiet, while also having easy access to the urban perks of Albany, including top-notch performing arts venues, festivals, city parks, restaurants and more.

The Downtown Campus is a few miles away from the Uptown Campus, and its classic Gregorian-style buildings acted as UAlbany's main campus until the 1960s. Recently renovated, today it houses the Rockefeller College of Public Affairs and Policy, the School of Criminal Justice, the School of Social Welfare, and ?the College of Nanotechnology, Science, and Engineering. The Health Sciences campus sits on a former pharmaceutical complex a few miles away in Rensselaer, NY, one of the region's booming bioscience research and high-tech centers. It's home to the School of Public Health and its research facilities and a long-standing, highly collaborative partnership with the New York State Department of Health.

Campus Facilities & Equipment

Facilities at the University at Albany offer students modern amenities and state-of-the-art features across living, learning and recreation.

Over the past decade, the Uptown Campus has experienced significant updates and new construction, adding new science and art facilities, administration buildings and wellness facilities. Athletics facilities have also recently experienced facelifts, including our basketball arena, the Broadview Center, which was totally revamped in 2023.

You can find updated and expanded spaces on the UAlbany downtown campus as well. In May 2024 we opened the doors to the newly renovated home of the College of Nanotechnology, Science, and Engineering, allowing for expanded programming in engineering, computer science and more.

Some other highlights include:
  • The Albany NanoTech Complex, one of the most advanced nanotechnology facilities of its kind in North America, where our students participate in real–world research and other hands–on experiences.
  • ETEC, UAlbany's newest state–of–the–art and environmentally sustainable facility, is a hub for innovation, scholarship, applied research and commercial development designed to foster cross–disciplinary collaborations to confront complex problems.
  • The Massry School of Business building, which opened in the fall of 2013, was awarded a LEED gold rating from the U.S. Green Building Council.
  • New York State Mesonet, the nation's most advanced and largest early warning weather detection network, resides on UAlbany's Uptown Campus and provides unprecedented research and learning opportunities to students.
  • The Well, a new recreation and wellness center at Colonial Quad, includes a spinning room, cardio space, functional fitness suite, meditation room, mat room and more.
  • A new and expanded Esports arena, set to debut Fall 2024
  • A new makerspace, equipped with 3D printers, laser cutters, soldering irons and a variety of other tools and hardware, is available to all students to create, invent and learn.

Off-Campus Opportunities

UAlbany's location in the Capital District offers a great advantage when it comes to internships, experiential learning, community service, outdoor recreation and easy access to major cities in the Northeastern U.S. Albany is home to the third-largest seat of government in the U.S., ideal for those interested in gaining experience in fields related to government, law, politics and social justice. The Capital District also has a robust business and tech scene. Our students are placed in a range of internship, research and other opportunities across business disciplines as well as computer science, engineering, nanotechnology, and more. Both U.S. and international study abroad programs offer students even more opportunities to learn and spread their wings, with 120+ study abroad programs in 80+ countries to choose from.

The University at Albany places a high value on giving back to the community, and our students complete thousands of hours of service in the Capital District every year. Our 20+ service-based student organizations, with missions ranging from early childhood education to cancer awareness, give students ample opportunities to get involved. Many of the other 250+ student organizations on campus also engage in service projects throughout the year.

Centrally located in the Northeastern U.S., and at the heart of the Empire State, Albany is a perfect homebase for exploring all-season outdoor recreation as well as other cities—New York City, Boston and Montreal are each about a three-hour drive away and easily accessible by bus or train. Hiking, biking, snow sports and more are plentiful in the near-by Adirondack, Catskill and Berkshire mountains.

What students say:

One of the best things about this "very social school" is that "there is always something to do and truly never a dull moment." The "beautiful campus that's easy to get around" is great, as it gives individuals or the many people with "big friend groups they spend their time with" (or the organizations they're involved with) plenty of places to work or hang, or to "go to the gym or sporting events, play volleyball, basketball, or soccer at the outdoor courts." Over the weekend, students add that "nightlife is a very big thing at the school," as are visits to the state capital of Albany, which "is huge and there are so many different places to go and explore (coffee shops, tons of street festivals and flea markets, art shows, lots of food options)." Explorative students also call out "all the historical places nearby," not to mention opportunities for winter skiing and snowboarding in the Adirondacks.

01. Overview
