From The School

Stetson welcomes an increasingly diverse mix of students from 45 states and 56 countries, as well as from all backgrounds and faiths.

Students are encouraged to get involved on campus and will find more than 100 clubs and organizations to join.

Stetson hosts 17 fraternities and sororities, including three historically Black Greek Letter organizations. Club and intramural sports also are popular and include E-sports, surfing, spikeball and RC Racing.

Multicultural student groups include the Black Student Association, Latinx Student Union, Jewish Student Organization, Asian Pacific American Coalition and Kaleidoscope. These groups will move into a larger Cross-Cultural Center on campus for the Fall 2023 semester.

In addition, student-athletes compete as the Stetson Hatters in NCAA Division I sports with 18 intercollegiate teams, including football, basketball, baseball, softball and beach volleyball.

What students say:

"Students are at Stetson because they are high achievers and want to make real change," say students. "My peers...show genuine interest in a wide variety of social justice issues and express concern for the wellbeing of others" and "are always willing to go the extra mile in and out of the classroom." Within this "goal-oriented and charismatic" group of Hatters, there is "a strong international presence in a small college community" and there are "many cultural organizations that support the many international students that come from all over the world." Students say, "it's easy to get to know people and create wonderful friendships" and one of the school's big strengths "is the sense of vibrancy, warmth, and relaxation the environment has overall." Students agree that it's good to have "a diverse and well-rounded group of individuals from all backgrounds" because given the small campus, people "are found everywhere on campus in small groups and you'll likely see your friends walking past you throughout the day." The overall impression is "that everyone is happy and taken care of here."

From the School

Founded in 1883, Stetson has a long history of academic excellence. The university started the first school of business in Florida and the first law school, which today ranks No. 1 in the nation in trial advocacy and No. 3 in legal writing.

In addition, the Digital Arts Program has been named one of the country's Top 50 undergraduate programs for Game Design by the Princeton Review.

The School of Business Administration joins less than 6% of business schools worldwide that have earned accreditation from AACSB International. The business school also belongs to an elite group of only 194 institutions in the world with both their business and accounting programs accredited by AACSB.

The School of Music is regarded as one of the nation's finest undergraduate-only schools of music, offering 12 majors and one-to-one connections with the artist-scholar faculty.

Stetson's overall student-to-faculty ratio of 11:1 allows professors to get to know students by name and provide the individual attention that can help lead to academic success. The rigorous academics helps to explain why students enjoy a 91% success rate after graduation, securing employment or gaining admission to many top graduate schools.

What students say

Stetson University is a private university that offers "great resources for students" among the palm trees of central Florida. The small size allows for flexibility in the curriculum and teaching styles aimed at making classes "the best success for the students as possible." One student enthuses about how a finance class discusses real-world impact: "we look at stock market trends daily, discuss governments around the world, and even watch some Federal Reserve press conferences." In other classes, professors who work in the industry "bring people from the government, school districts, and scientists" in for discussions. In almost every major, students point to "labs available for real life experiences" and "plenty of hands-on activities and work done in groups," noting that this practical focus extends to faculty who "help me find resources and opportunities that empower my academic capacity, and they provide me with concrete options for after I complete my undergraduate degree." The university focuses on supporting its students and "makes available as best they can solutions to any problem you might encounter on campus, from academics to social life." As one student says, "The university's commitment to interactive technologies, collaborative projects, and experiential learning creates a vibrant educational environment."

Location

Stetson has been named one of the most beautiful college campuses in the South, and features red brick buildings, century-old live oak trees draped with Spanish moss, and scenic green spaces where students gather to hammock and meet with friends. In addition, the school is a top pet-friendly college and welcomes dogs, cats, rabbits, geckos and other pets.

Stetson also has been selected as one of the nation's most environmentally responsible institutions by the Princeton Review, making the list of Green Colleges seven times. The university's core values emphasize environmental stewardship. Stetson has installed solar panels on several campus buildings to produce clean, renewable energy, and has adopted a conservation policy to reduce energy and water use, among other efforts.

Campus Facilities & Equipment

Stetson has invested $29 million in the sciences in recent years, including the new $19 million Cici & Hyatt Brown Hall for Health & Innovation, which opened in January 2023. The building connects to the recently renovated Sage Hall Science Center and creates a science complex with new labs and state-of-the-art equipment to meet students' growing demand for health and science degrees.

In addition, historic Chaudoin Hall will reopen in August 2023 after an $8.7 million renovation to add modern upgrades to the all-female residence hall, including kitchens, student lounges and laundry rooms on the three floors.

Stetson offers 29 housing options on campus, including residence halls, apartments, 24-hour quiet living, and fraternity and sorority houses. The Carlton Union Building serves as the student hub with four dining establishments, including the main Commons dining hall and a coffee shop, plus a campus bookstore, student government offices and internet radio station. Students also can visit the Hollis Center, the on-campus gym, for a workout and a dip in the outdoor pool.

Off-Campus Opportunities

Stetson is conveniently located a few blocks from Downtown DeLand. Students can easily walk to cafes, restaurants, shops, nightlife and a popular farmers market. This quaint, small town was awarded the title, America's Best Main Street, and is ideally situated 45 minutes by car to Orlando and 30 minutes to Daytona Beach. Nearby are natural springs, including one of the state's largest winter gathering spots for the threatened manatees at Blue Spring.

What students say:

While students take their academics seriously, the overall environment at Stetson is "very pleasant and relaxing" and "our campus and town are so beautiful." The main campus in the college town of Deland includes an expansive green where students can often be found "studying and hammocking," and "the beach is an essential part of the Stetson experience." On the weekends, the school is "filled with events, parties, or supporting the athletes" of the school's 18 Division I sports teams, and there's a big downtown scene for those looking to get away. Not that you need to, note students of the "vibrant and close-knit community," given that "there are so many [student organizations] to choose from," and that they're "lively and very inclusive." Meanwhile, the programming board "always hosts fun events [from laser tag to arcade night to concerts] for students to attend." As for the school itself, students appreciate that "Stetson constantly brings in guest speakers which allows us to...become connected to the outside world." The opportunity of such events "provides great connections for your future."
