From The School

Being part of the UNE community means being involved. There are plenty of ways to get involved on the Biddeford Campus. From playing on one of the University's 18 varsity athletics teams, to joining one of the many available clubs and organizations, to attending events and lectures, involvement in campus life can be as extensive as a student wants it to be. With from which to choose, students are sure to find a place to belong. Whatever the interest — whether it is academics or theater, community-based service or LGBTQ+ issues, student government or club sports, figure skating or surfing — our students find a welcoming community eager to share their passions.

strive for success on and off the field, and our Nor'easters athletics teams are a serious source of pride on campus. UNE's intercollegiate teams compete at the Division III level in men's basketball, cross country, football, golf, ice hockey, lacrosse and soccer. Varsity women's sports include basketball, cross country, field hockey, ice hockey, lacrosse, rugby, soccer, softball, swimming, track and field, and volleyball.

What students say:

Education is what bonds the student body at UNE. "Most students here came for the academics and are focused on developing an education for a great future." Many are prehealth and Marine Science majors, and while friend groups often form within the fields, some students find they "strangely all get along in one form or another." Where women in science are underrepresented in the workforce, at UNE, "the average student is a woman in STEM," creating a rare opportunity for women to find like minds within their studies. The school is still working to be more diverse, "but as one of the few POC on campus, I really do feel the love and acceptance UNE and my peers offer." So far as "political standings, religion, sexual orientation, [and] gender identity" go, students welcome the opportunity to collaborate from different perspectives. Many students find common ground in their studies and building a better tomorrow: "I wouldn't be surprised if nearly every student said they hope to make the world better in some sort of way."

Admissions

From the School:

Students applying for undergraduate admission should submit a Common Application or a UNE Application and transcripts of all academic work (high school and college if applicable). UNE uses a test-blind admissions policy, which means we will not consider ACT or SAT scores for general admission. Instead, we review a student's high school experience as a whole. Please see our for more information.

UNE's nonbinding Early Action deadline for fall term admission is November 15. The regular decision deadline is February 15. Applications received after the deadline are reviewed on a space-available basis. Applications for the spring term are accepted through January 5.

All prospective students are encouraged to visit UNE. Campus tours are offered most weeks Monday-Saturday with additional visit opportunities available, including academic information sessions, open houses, as well as virtual events. More information is available at .

What students say

The University of New England boasts scenic coastal campuses on both sides of the Atlantic. Its motto, "Innovation for a healthier planet," is demonstrated through rigorous and research-driven programs in Marine Life and Medicine, like "semester long research projects with my classmates using zebrafish" or a VR patient-treating simulator available to Nursing students. It's a "dedicated student body, most of which (plan to continue) on to graduate school," and popular pre-dental, pre-medicine, and other pre-health programs offer a "GradVantage" track that allows promising students to combine UNE undergraduate admission with a potential graduate track.

When it comes to professors, students say, "UNE finds experts in their field to teach," a policy that opens the door for many undergraduate students to do graduate-level research and publish articles. And despite being the largest private university in Maine, many students still enjoy small class sizes and "build personal relationships with their professors, which in turn can lead to research opportunities." It can be a struggle, though, which is why it's nice that many professors know their students by name and are "always there to help us when needed" and that the Student Academic Success Center provides tutors to assist in everything "from writing papers to website building to math class."

BIDDEFORD CAMPUS
UNE's campus in Biddeford, Maine offers more than 4,000 feet of scenic shoreline where the Saco River flows into the Atlantic Ocean. From surfing and swimming to kayaking and running along the shore, the ocean is never more than a short walk away. The campus is also home to a 363-acre forest with beautiful trails to wander and vernal pools to explore. With Boston just a short 90-minute drive away, southern Maine is an ideal place to study and live.

PORTLAND CAMPUS
A rustic brick port sets the stage for a thriving buy-local economy and dynamic cultural scene with outdoor adventure all around. UNE's Portland Campus, a classic, century-old New England quad just a short drive from the waterfront, anchors UNE's tight-knit, engaged community within this exciting city.

TANGIER CAMPUS
UNE's Tangier, Morocco campus features state-of-the-art labs and classrooms, as well as easy access to beaches, downtown adventures and cultural attractions. The campus includes a residence hall, an on-site caf?, fitness areas, and plenty of outdoor spaces to soak up the sun. Many opportunities exist beyond the serenity of the campus, including excursions in Morocco and nearby countries.

Campus Facilities & Equipment

Both the Biddeford and Portland Campuses feature buildings with a variety of uses to support the needs of the University community.

BIDDEFORD CAMPUS
UNE's gorgeous waterfront campus in Biddeford, Maine, offers more than 4,000 feet of scenic shoreline where the Saco River flows into the Atlantic Ocean. The campus includes the , which offers more than 30 undergraduate majors, and the , which offers the Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.) degree.

Within its 540 acres, the Biddeford Campus offers the , UNE's student hub; the Alfond Center for the Health Sciences, a modern science education facility; the , where students prepare for the marine careers of the coming "ocean century"; and the , which includes an NHL-size hockey arena, basketball arena and other athletics facilities.

PORTLAND CAMPUS
UNE's historic campus in the picturesque coastal city of Portland, Maine, provides a quintessential New England quad lined by buildings that have been welcoming students for more than a century. The campus sits in a suburban Portland neighborhood, just a short drive from the downtown waterfront.

The campus houses Maine's only , the , which offers undergraduate and graduate programs in several allied health fields. The is currently in the process of relocating to the Portland Campus, as part of a new, world-class interprofessional healthcare education facility. The 41-acre campus also includes the Center for Global Humanities, Art Gallery and Maine Women Writers Collection.

Off-Campus Opportunities

On any given weekend at UNE, thrilling adventures await. Students can ride countless miles of mountain bike trails and scenic rural roads, kayak and sail on Casco Bay, camp and hike at hundreds of great parks, or just take in some sun at UNE's own Freddy Beach. With more than 90 clubs and organizations on UNE's campuses, students discover many opportunities to get involved. Whether an academic club, an arts club, student government, a cultural organization or an outdoor recreation group, it's easy to find others who are ready to welcome new students aboard.

UNE also fosters global citizenship by providing the opportunity for all students to study abroad. In fact, UNE students study abroad at five times the national average. Students can study at our very own campus in , or our partner institutions in , and . Plus, UNE offers in many exciting locations. Opportunities include studying coral reefs in Belize, volunteering at a local elementary school in Cuba, providing health services in Ghana, and much more.

What students say:

Life at UNE is all about enjoying the outdoors. "Students spend a lot of time in the natural preserves and wildlife near campus," like the UNE Nature Trail and East Point Bird Sanctuary. The nearby beach is a popular respite "no matter the weather." When the weather shifts, students don't give up on outdoor activities: they make use of the school's "discounted ski passes."

Those who prefer indoor activities will also find much to do. On the scholarly side, there's the "innovative" Makerspace, a "fully equipped laboratory for creating and building," where students from all disciplines come to realize their ideas. There's also fun trivia or "Wicked Big Bingo." There's even a mix of both inside and outside participation for things like bird watching, where avid participants can either take to the forest or relax by spotting species "from the second floor of the commons."

UNE is "definitely not a party school"-in fact, the dining hall and library are referred to as "the heart of the campus." There are, however, weekend gatherings on campus and "things to do in Biddeford; you don't have to drive to Portland." School spirit is also notably high for hockey-so much so that you might not be able to find parking!
