01. What the School is Known For

From the School

The largest private university in Minnesota, St. Thomas is big enough to offer 150+ undergraduate majors and minors, yet small enough for professors to know every student's first name. In fact, 100% of classes are taught by faculty (not teaching assistants). As a Catholic university, we develop future leaders of all faiths looking to make a positive impact on the world. St. Thomas emphasizes practical skills and hands-on experience that prepare students for today's workplace, while also preparing them for long-term success by building timeless qualities including leadership, creativity and ethical decision-making. Students have opportunities to conduct research alongside faculty in fields ranging from engineering and environmental science to English.

The university's partnerships (with Fortune 500 companies and its 110,000+ alumni) connect students to internships — 65 percent of undergraduates complete at least one internship. Ninety-three percent of students are employed or enrolled in graduate school within eight months of graduation.

St. Thomas is home to the Schulze School of Entrepreneurship, named for its benefactor and founder of Best Buy, Richard M. Schulze. This nationally ranked (and #1 in Minnesota) entrepreneurship program helps students harness entrepreneurial thinking to create innovative business ideas that impact people's lives. At the Schulze School, students ignite their entrepreneurial passion through experiential learning activities inside and outside the classroom—including the Freshman Innovation Immersion experience, nationally renowned competitions and startup accelerators to help grow their business ideas. St. Thomas also offers the four-year, full-tuition Schulze Innovation Scholarship to nurture students into innovative, entrepreneurial leaders—and to help launch their careers.

From The School

Campus life means getting involved. St. Thomas fields 22 varsity teams and has won 15 NCAA national championships in eight sports. Students widely participate in academic and recreational clubs and can live in learning communities with students who share their affinities.

What students say:

People at University of St. Thomas are first and foremost "friendly and nice" and "very respectful of each other." Here, your peers want you to succeed and are "eager to help each other out." In fact, some even say their student body is one of their "biggest motiving factors." For many, the student body "energy is very supportive and comforting."Despite a lack of diversity on campus, students are focused on "always making connections." Most feel "there are lots of opportunities...for supporting underrepresented identities and magnifying those voices." Many students are "passionate advocates for inclusivity and representation," and in recent years, "creating a culture of love and kindness toward one another has been effective at changing the culture on campus and helping everyone feel more included." Even with the current advancements, some students would like to see further improvement in "diversity and outreach to underrepresented populations," but still acknowledge that it "is getting better."

Grounded in the University of St. Thomas mission to educate students to be morally responsible business leaders, the Schulze School of Entrepreneurship prepares students with the skills and confidence they need to unlock their entrepreneurial potential. Offering the four-year, full-tuition Schulze Innovation Scholarship, the Schulze School equips students with tools to challenge the status quo, craft better solutions, and create enduring value. A full range of supporting services – including access to seed capital, mentoring programs, free legal advice and multiple business plan competitions – complement the comprehensive classroom experience. Students leave the Schulze School ready to construct entrepreneurial solutions in their own startups or as innovation leaders in existing businesses.

What students say

University of St. Thomas is Minnesota's largest private university. The Catholic institution "[holds] a high standard of academic excellence," and in turn, "[offers a] myriad of resources for each student to take advantage of." Students have the opportunity to participate in honors classes that are "more discussion-based." Many students appreciate the chances to participate in non-traditional learning, citing activities such as "going" down to the Mississippi River to do research for geology class" or "attending the Nobel Peace Prize Conference," and "listening in on court cases."

Professors have the ability to "make or break the experience," and many faculty members prioritize "intellectual curiosity" and "get excited when you want to dive deeper into course material outside of the classroom." The modest student-to-faculty ratio makes it "easy to connect in the classroom, which then makes it easier to succeed in a class." Plus, many love that there are "professors who actively help find internships and jobs that expand learning and experience." And the relationships go beyond just the academic: "The faculty at St. Thomas [serves] as teachers, guidance counselors, career advisors, and even friends."

05. Campus LifeScroll to Top  Scroll To Top Arrow

Location

We offer a traditional campus in two vibrant metropolitan areas of Minneapolis and St. Paul. Our main campus in St. Paul is set on 78 acres with beautifully maintained grounds and picturesque architecture with easy access to all the Twin Cities has to offer.

In fact, the Twin Cities double your options, with two active downtowns and the best parks of any cities in America. If you're looking for an urban experience with entertainment, dining, shopping and arts venues, we've got it. If you love nature and the outdoors, we've got that, too. Our St. Paul campus borders the Mississippi River and miles of trails connect you to Minneapolis' famous chain of lakes. In addition, with 17 Fortune 500 companies headquartered here, you'll have access to ample internship and job opportunities.

Campus Facilities & Equipment

St. Thomas offers all the amenities and opportunities you'd expect from a large urban university; including:

  • Multiple dining options many specializing in fresh, sustainable ingredients
  • On-campus exercise and recreation facilities
  • Student center with eateries, a coffee shop and even a bowling alley
  • Center for Well-Being that provides coordinated care for health, counseling and wellness
  • Campus chapel and center for faith

Off-Campus Opportunities

Study abroad is huge at St. Thomas. (We even have our own campus in Rome.) And there are so many ways to go global from here: semester or academic year programs, summer opportunities and the always-popular J-Term (January Term). You might study social entrepreneurship in India, the legacy of colonialism on indigenous culture in New Zealand, AIDS and apartheid in South Africa, neuroecology in the Bahamas, the emerging markets in Argentina and Brazil, or organic chemistry in Rome. You'll also immerse yourself in local culture and customs, meet new friends and, of course, have plenty of fun along the way.

What students say:

The greatest strengths of St. Thomas would be [its] dedication to making students feel at home through an "impactful focus on building community" among undergrads. As one transfer student puts it, "As soon as I moved in I felt like I found my home." In their free time, St. Thomas enrollees-affectionately known as "Tommies"-can be found working out at the gym, exploring "neighborhood bars and restaurants" and "[taking] advantage of our numerous coffee shops on campus and off." The school "offers free transportation to locations all around the Twin Cities," making it easy to get off campus even without access to a car. In the warmer months, people leverage the "many open grassy areas that allow students to hang out, hammock, play causal games, and even study," and they're "able to rent out yard games and other activity supplies either at a low cost or for free." If organized fun is more your style, "There are a lot of school-sponsored events" featuring "free goodies around campus (such as crafts, T-shirts, [and] food)." Truly, "You'd have to be actively trying to be bored" at St. Thomas.

01. Overview

Thomas.
