From The School

TU hosts more than 200 student organizations and societies that appeal to a wide range of student interests-from professional to recreational. (For the complete listing, see https://utulsa.edu/campus-life/student-activities/student-organizations/.) Students can participate in a variety of activities on and off campus including intramural sports, special interest clubs, trips to Tulsa's museums, parks, shopping malls, cultural events, etc.

What students say:

The student body at The University of Tulsa is comprised of "friendly" and "inclusive" individuals. Of course, it probably helps that the school is home to "a diverse group of students from various economic, academic, religious, political, and ethnic backgrounds." Indeed, "Division I athletes, international students, military veterans, sorority sisters, petroleum engineering majors, and piano performance majors represent a few of the many groups woven together on TU's campus." Undergrads are "committed to doing well in school." As one student explains, "We are all here to do well, but we are here to do well together." Undergrads also describe their classmates as "smart," "engaging," and "extremely focused on their studies." And most "are incredibly involved at TU, whether it be in Greek life, athletics, music, [or] research." Additionally, a lot of "TU students look for opportunities to challenge themselves and impact their community." One thrilled undergrad sums up the campus experience: "TU honestly feels like a small-town community. Everyone is so friendly and kind, and it's like having one giant family."

Admissions

From the School:

The University of Tulsa seeks students whose academic background indicates potential for success in the university's rigorous academic environment. Performance in high school college-preparatory subjects and scores on the SAT or ACT are key factors in the admission evaluation, but each applicant is reviewed holistically. The counselor recommendation, extracurricular activities, and indicators of leadership, creativity, and focus are all taken into consideration. Campus visits and interviews are highly recommended.

TU has a non-binding, Early Action freshman admission plan with an application deadline of November 1. Decisions are mailed within three weeks. Applications received after November 1 are reviewed under a Rolling Admission process with notifications made on an ongoing basis after mid-December.

An official high school transcript, ACT or SAT score results, and a guidance counselor recommendation are required of freshman applicants. TU accepts the Common Application or TU's application online. TU adheres to the national Candidate's Reply Date of May 1.

The one-year Presidential Leaders Fellowship program prepares students to maximize their college experience through various service opportunities, in addition to weekly classes and special projects.

The TU Center for Information Security is developing defenses against cyber-terrorist attacks and information warfare. The center supports TU's National Security Agency (NSA)-accredited certificate program in information assurance and a curriculum that integrates information security with computer law and policy issues. TU has been designated a Center of Excellence in Information Assurance by the NSA and is one of six pioneer institutions selected by the National Science Foundation for the Federal Cyber Service Initiative (Cyber Corps).

Air Force ROTC is available through a satellite program.

Students may receive credit through Advanced Placement testing. Depending on their test scores, students who complete the International Baccalaureate diploma can receive up to 30 college credits.

The University of Tulsa operates on a semester calendar. The fall term begins in late August, the spring term in mid-January, and the summer session in late May.

What students say

The many students at The University of Tulsa, a small private research university, find it to be the total package. After all, it combines "the friendly environment of a smaller university and the academic, employment, extracurricular, and service opportunities of a larger university." It also does a tremendous job of fostering an atmosphere that's "conducive to collaboration and growth." In general, students describe the academics as "challenging." And a number of undergrads emphasize TU's "strong engineering school," which thoroughly prepares students for "work[ing] in the industry, especially [within the] energy [sector]." All undergraduates, no matter their major, benefit from "small class sizes." In turn, this affords students the opportunity to build "close relationships...with [the] faculty," full of professors who "are great resources for [both] internships and real-world advice." Aside from being great contacts, Tulsa professors are "very knowledgeable and passionate about their subjects." They also "make their students a priority" and they're "very accessible outside of class." As one student expounds, "Many of my professors frequently invite students to their office hours and remind us of their availability.... [It's clear they] care about my academic experience, career readiness, and about me as a person."

Renovated in 2014, the Allen Chapman Student Union includes a food court with nine eateries and a convenience store. It also houses an ATM, offices for student organizations, lecture and meeting rooms, the Faculty Club, post office and the Hurricane Hut sports bar.

The TU College of Law received an "A" from National Jurist magazine for Best Law School Facility with more than 110,000 square feet.

Off-Campus Opportunities

The university strongly supports studying abroad, and the Center for Global Engagement helps students locate the perfect program, whether it is for TU credit or as an intern/volunteer. Students have hundreds of options through direct exchange with an international university, through an affiliate-sponsored program or as part of a faculty-led course.

Many students take advantage of the internship opportunities afforded by Tulsa's business and industry community, as well as in the arts, social services and government agencies.

What students say:

While University of Tulsa undergrads say that "a good portion of [their] time is...spent studying," there's still plenty of fun to be had outside the confines of the library and/or classroom. For example, "there are a ton of active student organizations" and you can always find "an event to attend or free food to eat." Popular options include "homecoming...dog petting days, bowling, [and] carnivals." One excited student adds, "TU is good about providing events bi-weekly, like s'mores at the Student Union, an outdoor movie, or a play." If the Greek scene interests you, you'll be happy to learn that "the fraternities on campus...usually [host] events Thursday through Saturday." A number of undergrads also love to relax on the "many [beautiful] lawns" on the TU campus. And you're sure to find a handful of students playing any number of games, from "baseball [and] football [to] Capture the Flag." If you prefer your athletics to be a little more structured, there's also a "very popular... intramural sports [program]." As for hometown Tulsa, "there's a great food, music, and art culture in downtown Tulsa so you can always find something to do." And we're told that "the restaurants here are awesome, small and large concert venues attract all types of artists, and there all festivals of all types throughout the year."

From the School

The Tulsa Curriculum links a broad, humanities-based core and writing for all students across all disciplines. TU students can receive a personalized education that is well rounded. Candidates for graduation must complete at least 124 semester hours of coursework.

The Honors Program engages students in a critical examination of the major epochs and ideas of Western thought and culture through careful study of primary texts. A separate application is required. The Tulsa Undergraduate Research Challenge (TURC) program combines advanced research, scholarship, and community service.

TU's Global Scholars Program engages students in global issues from the perspective of their particular major. Students take a set of classes that explore the big questions affecting the world today and participate in monthly programming on campus and an international study, research or intern experience.

Hardesty Hall, TU's newest building, houses 300 residents and houses the offices of Career Services, Center for Global Education, Multicultural Affairs, Greek Life and the English Institute for international students.

The Lorton Performance Center, which houses the School of Music and the Department of Film Studies, features a 700-seat concert hall, specialized rehearsal and practice rooms and a film production suite with post-production editing and scoring capabilities.

In 2012, the College of Engineering & Natural Sciences added two new buildings: J. Newton Rayzor Hall, which features 24 integrated classrooms and state-of-the-art teaching/research laboratories. Rayzor houses the Tandy School of Computer Science and the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. Stephenson Hall is home to the McDougall School of Petroleum Engineering and the Department of Mechanical Engineering. Additional research facilities are located in Keplinger Hall and at TU's North Campus where government and industry-funded research consortia foster student learning while exploring innovations and solving petroleum industry problems.

The historic McFarlin Library and the Mabee Legal Information Center house more than 5 million items. McFarlin holdings include 991,000 volumes, more than 680,000 titles, 54,000 electronic journals, 450,000 electronic books, and more than 1,000 collections of electronic reference sources and databases as well as print resources. McFarlin's Department of Special Collections and University Archives' rare book holdings are internationally recognized, particularly in Native American history and law. The department includes one of the five largest collections in the world on James Joyce, the life archive of Nobel Laureate Sir V.S. Naipaul and holdings in nineteenth and twentieth century Irish, British and American Literature. The library's Academic Technology Center annex includes computer labs, a coffee shop and reading rooms.

Helmerich Hall, which houses the Collins College of Business, was renovated to include innovative learning spaces such as the Williams Student Services Center and Studio Blue. Academic centers include the Schools of Accounting and CIS; Energy Economics, Policy and Commerce and Finance, Operations Management and International Business; as well as the Departments of Economics and Management and Marketing.

Chapman Center for Communicative Disorders, part of the university's Oxley College of Health Sciences, serves the community in its clinical facility and is the learning center for the Department of Communication Disorders. The department has the latest equipment for research, diagnostic and therapy activities.

The Kendall College of Arts and Sciences features the Alexandre Hogue Gallery in the School of Art, Design and Art History, TUTV Media Lab, as well as psychology and anthropology labs.

The Oxley College of Health Sciences, housed at 1215 S. Boulder Avenue in downtown Tulsa, occupies floors 1 through 5 of remodeled space that encompasses 52,000 square feet. The college includes state-of-the-art classrooms and the Lawson Family Nursing Simulation Center and Skills Laboratory.

The Donald W. Reynolds Center is TU's arena and convocation center. This facility, home for the intercollegiate basketball and volleyball programs, has cutting-edge facilities for video editing and training.

The university's sports and recreation complex features the Collins Fitness Center, Michael D. Case Tennis Center (which has hosted NCAA Finals), track, intramural and NCAA-grade soccer fields and softball fields.

In partnership with the City of Tulsa, the university manages Gilcrease Museum as well as the Zarrow Center for Art and Education, which provides gallery space, classes and studio space in the city's Tulsa Arts District.

TU students have the option of hundreds of attractive and convenient on-campus apartments and residence halls.
