01. What the School is Known For

From the School

West Virginia Wesleyan is a private four-year residential arts and sciences college that is affiliated with The United Methodist Church. Wesleyan creates a unique learning environment enabling our students to develop the skills, values, relationships, and perspectives needed for them to obtain employment, enhance their careers, and demonstrate leadership throughout their lives. Wesleyan graduates are well prepared to be successful and respected citizens in a rapidly changing world. 91% of the graduate in the last three years obtained a job in their field or were attending graduate school within one year of graduation (with 85% of the class reporting).

The college's student to faculty ratio is 13:1 with an average class size of 19. The College offers over 40 majors and over 40 minors of study, and several additional master's programs spanning Athletic Training, Business Administration, Mental Health Counseling, English (Creative Writing), and Nursing. Recently, the College launched its first doctoral program: Doctorate Nurse Practitioner (DNP).

West Virginia Wesleyan is accredited by the Commission on Institutions of Higher Education of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools and approved by the University Senate of The United Methodist Church. It is a member of the National Association of Schools of Music and is approved by the West Virginia Department of Education and the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education. The College participates in the Interstate Certification Project whereby several states certify teachers graduating from Wesleyan's Department of Education. The athletic training program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs. Degree programs offered in business and economics, including the Master of Business Administration program, are accredited by the International Assembly for Collegiate Business Education.

All academic programs either require or strongly encourage the completion of an internship experience. Wesleyan's academic calendar is 4-4-1 that includes an optional May Term in which students pursue unique study abroad courses or intensive study curricular offerings. The Advising and Career Center assists students with course scheduling, academic advising, internships and study abroad, resume writing, job searches, and graduate and professional school placement. The Learning Center provides tutoring services as well as comprehensive services for students with diagnosed learning disabilities.

Of the more than 1,050 students, 53 percent are from West Virginia, while the other 47 percent originate from 39 states and 19 countries. 16 percent of Wesleyan's American students are minority students. Over 90 percent of Wesleyan's new students live on-campus and the College guarantees four years of on-campus housing for all undergraduate students. Housing options include double and single rooms, suites, and apartments. Campus dining is provided and prepared by a contracted professional catering service.

From The School

Wesleyan has a balanced and diverse student life program that includes more than 70 campus organizations. Included among these are a campus radio station, newspaper, student government, departmental clubs, national fraternities and sororities, and religious organizations. Over 84 percent of Wesleyan students of those reporting in the NSSE survey participate in community service activities that include the complete administration of a youth basketball program to Special Olympics, to tutoring, mentoring, and educational activities to senior citizens programs to more global programs such as hurricane relief and international service trips.

Wesleyan features 23 varsity programs in NCAA Division II. Wesleyan competes in the Mountain East Conference. Our newest sports include Women's Lacrosse and competitive dance.

In fall of 2018, WVWC launched varsity e-sports including an eSports arena and scholarships for participants and currently has a team of over 35 participants. It was the first program in the State.

What students say:

"Our school runs the gamut of students," proclaims a junior. There is a "range from very poor to well-to-do" in this little "cluster of everyone." Ethnic minorities are reasonably represented given the location, and there are "a lot of international students, too." You have your "dedicated Christians." "You have your athletes, the sorority/fraternity people, the average ones, the theater group, the brainiacs, and the stuck-up people." Overall, students here are "motivated but down-to-earth" and in good physical shape. Many students play a sport or spend a lot of time outside. "The average student participates in Greek life and parties on the weekend" as well. Wesleyan is also a friendly environment. "Everyone knows everyone else," and people are "nice to nearly everyone." "Everywhere you go you feel like you're welcomed." At the same time, "there are many cliques, and people tend to stay in the same group they found freshmen year."

Admissions

From the School:

Students are selected by the Office of Admission based on ability, interests, academic preparation, character, and promise, as indicated by their own statements on the application, as well as by high school or college records, recommendations, and standardized test results. Open without discrimination to all qualified students, the College reserves the right to refuse to admit any applicant who, because of low scholarship or citizenship record, is deemed by the Admission and Academic Standing Council to be unlikely to succeed within the standards the College seeks to maintain.

Persons wishing to be admitted directly from high school should present an application for admission with (no paper application fee); a transcript from an accredited high school. West Virginia Wesleyan is test optional with no SAT or ACT requirements for admissions. Applicants from non-accredited high schools or completing General Educational Development may be considered for admission if satisfactory ability and achievement are demonstrated. Students are encouraged to apply for free online (www.wvwc.edu) or via the Common Application (www.commonapp.org). Neither of these applications require a fee.

Persons seeking to transfer from another accredited college or university may be admitted to advanced standing upon presentation of an application for admission; an official transcript showing all credits attempted at all post-secondary institutions previously attended; a high school transcript certifying graduation and showing courses pursued and grades earned and, if the cumulative grade point average is less than 2.5, either the SAT I or ACT scores. Wesleyan will accept transfer credit courses compatible with its academic program. 91³Ô¹Ï and hours so earned shall count toward graduation. The College accepts no more than 60 semester hours of credit from a junior or community college.

Students who transfer to Wesleyan with an associate's degree from a regionally accredited community or junior college may be admitted with the degree credited as fulfilling Wesleyan's general studies requirements when the total educational background, including high school record, shows compatibility with Wesleyan's general studies requirements. Deficiencies in general studies requirements, as determined by the Admission and Academic Standing Council, must be satisfied after enrollment at Wesleyan.

Wesleyan participates in the Advanced Placement Program of the College Entrance Examination Board and the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program. Students who have successfully completed AP or IB programs should contact the Office of Admission for credit transfer policies.

From the School

Wesleyan's liberal arts curriculum begins with a broad base view in a variety of core courses designed to enrich the student's whole view. The classes range from the humanities to contemporary issues and can be intermingled with the courses in the individual's major throughout the four-year program.

Wesleyan's Honors Program is offered for superior students who meet the specific requirements and demonstrate a high quality of academic excellence. Challenging, yet rewarding, classes, along with culturally enriching outings, offer Honors students a diverse and unique educational experience.

What students say

West Virginia Wesleyan College is a small, private liberal arts school with a career-oriented bent and "a religious undertone" located "among the hills" of "the great state of West Virginia." There are more than 40 majors on offer. There's also a somewhat unique May Term here (when students focus on just one course) and an abundance of scholarships. In addition, Wesleyan grads enjoy exceptionally high acceptance rates at medical schools, professional schools, and graduate schools. Students tell us that the academic atmosphere here is "encouraging and intimate." Classes are usually "small," "which is extremely helpful in difficult" courses. The faculty is "very accessible." "One of the things I love most about this college is that the professors are so willing to meet with you outside of class," raves a biology major. In the classroom, some professors are "lackadaisical" or "awful," but the vast majority are "interesting," "enthusiastic, and genuinely great." They are "knowledgeable in their subject and are willing to help you in any way." "They really want you to succeed in life."

Location

Situated in the foothills of the Allegheny Mountains, Wesleyan's beautiful 100-acre campus is located in the quaint, residential town of Buckhannon, West Virginia. Buckhannon has been included in Norman Crampton's book, The Top 100 Best Small Towns in America, a Random House Publication. Many students are drawn to this personal and picturesque setting and the numerous outdoor opportunities located near campus. The local community offers movie theatres, coffee houses, department stores, and a wide selection of local and chain restaurants. Wesleyan is a short two-hour drive from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and 90 minutes from Charleston, West Virginia, the state capital.

Campus Facilities & Equipment

Wesleyan's 23 buildings include 10 modern residence hall units, including two suite style halls renovated or newly built in the last eight years. Located in the center of campus is Wesley Chapel, which chapel serves as a focal point of campus and houses many campus events, both religious and cultural. Benedum Campus and Community Center houses a convenience store, bookstore, swimming pool, campus radio station, student development offices, study lounges, and a cabaret-style restaurant, recently renovated for 2020. The Rockefeller Physical Education Center includes a main arena that seats 3,700 spectators, an intramural gymnasium, training rooms, and an indoor turf training area. The multimillion-dollar Reemsnyder Research Center was opened in 2009 and boasts state of the art laboratory space for the sciences. Other vital buildings on campus include Christopher Hall of Science; Middleton Hall, which houses the Nursing Department and region-renowned simulation facilities; and the Lynch-Raine Administration Building. In addition, the multimillion-dollar Virginia Thomas Law Center for the Performing Arts, opened in 2009, offers the most advanced performing arts facility of its kind in the region. Most recently, a completely renovated student wellness center was opened in 2012 along with a new multi-sport stadium project in phase one in 2015. Since 2015 more than 50 learning spaces have been completely updated and renovated.

Wesleyan's Annie Merner Pfeiffer Library re-opened in Fall 2019 after a 2.2-million-dollar renovation including new 24-hour access, food market, lounge and study spaces, technology, and incredible enhancements to make it the academic hub of campus with facilities to rival any library in the region.

The entire campus has been outfitted with a ubiquitous campus-wide wireless network ensuring access to all students, faculty, and staff from all major campus buildings and every residence hall room. Network speeds are improved yearly and rival any private college in the region.

Off-Campus Opportunities

Wesleyan encourages all students to expand their education beyond the traditional classroom. Many students have studied abroad in such places as England, Ireland, Wales, Germany, Spain, Kenya, Scotland, and Australia. Professional internships are available in the Buckhannon area, Charleston, WV, Washington, D.C.; New York, NY; Pittsburgh, PA; and other states and countries.

What students say:

The idyllic campus here is "very peaceful." However, some of the dorms are "in need of serious remodeling." Also, while some students say "the food is fine," others disagree. "We have the same thing every other day, and most of it is tasteless," grumbles a famished junior. Community service is a fairly big deal, but intercollegiate athletics, theater, and frats and sororities are "the three main things around here." "The nightlife on the weekends is pretty decent," reports a senior. "The fraternity houses throw pretty great theme parties," and there is "a significant amount" of drinking and revelry. "Even if you aren't Greek, you party on the weekends at the fraternity houses." The tiny, "quaint" town of Buckhannon is "a great place to relax and de-stress" and there are a few popular bars but, otherwise, "there isn't much to do." "The geographic location of the campus lends itself to people who like to be outdoors," though. "It rains and snows a lot," but you can whitewater raft and rock climb to your heart's content, and there are "some great spots for snowboarding in the winter." Urban pursuits are considerably harder to find. "Clarksburg isn't too far away if you want a nice dinner or want to go shopping," and Morgantown—home to West Virginia University—offers the big state school vibe. That's about it, though. "People from out of state will definitely go into culture shock from the rural atmosphere," warns a senior.
