01. What the School is Known For

From the School

Wright State University, located 8 miles northeast of downtown Dayton, Ohio, annually serves more than 10,000 students and offers more than 300 undergraduate, graduate, doctoral, professional, and certificate academic programs. The university also operates a branch campus, Wright State University-Lake Campus, on the shores of Grand Lake St. Marys in Celina, Ohio.

Wright State was named to honor aviation pioneers Orville and Wilbur Wright, who invented the world's first successful airplane in their Dayton bicycle shop. In fact, the Wright brothers conducted most of their early test flights at Huffman Prairie, just a short drive from our Dayton campus. Originally a cooperative branch campus of Miami University and The Ohio State University, Wright State achieved full university status in 1967.

Campus life offers many artsand culture-related activities, including outstanding theatrical productions and music concerts, NCAA Division I athletic teams to cheer on, outdoor recreation, an indoor fitness center and Olympic-size swimming pool, and community engagement and service opportunities.

What students say:

The Wright State student body encompasses many groups: “young, old, upper-class, middle-class, lower-class, some come from real farmland, others from urban areas.†There’s a large nontraditional student body as a result of “neighboring an Air Force Base.†“Military professionals and retirees†add to the mix of foreign students (who are “especially from India) and “parents going back to school.†Also, “WSU has a great disability center, which attracts disabled students from across the state.†Traditionally, “Most students are commuters, and this is unfortunate, but WSU is trying to get away from being a commuter school, as more and more campus housing is becoming available.†Until then, “The majority of students come to class and leave.†“As a result of this there is virtually no community at Wright State,†one student says.

Location

Suburban campus setting, located 8 miles northeast of Dayton, Ohio, just off Interstate 675. Campus is 634 acres, which includes a nature preserve and student housing. The Fairfield Commons mall area, and other shopping centers around it, include just about every store and dining experience you could desire. A pedestrian bridge over I-675 connects the campus to the shopping areas.

Wright State's on-campus student housing includes 30 buildings, a variety of room configurations and community options. Wright State offers some of the biggest dorm rooms in the state.

Dayton's vibrant downtown and its shops, restaurants, and sports venues are surrounded by a diverse metropolitan area of more than 800,000 residents. Those who live in the??enjoy an affordable cost of living and housing as well as a rich quality of life that includes outdoor recreation, performing arts and other cultural amenities, professional and college sports, historical landmarks, and almost endless shopping and dining options.

Wright State's 103-acre Lake Campus is located in Celina, Ohio, on the north shore of Grand Lake St. Marys. The smaller student body allows for an even greater degree of personal attention from faculty and a safe, welcoming atmosphere for students.

Campus Facilities & Equipment

All but two buildings in the academic area of Wright State's campus are connected by weatherproof tunnels, making Wright State one of the most accessible campuses in the nation—No. 1 in the world among university tunnel systems according to and No. 3 in the nation in wheelchair-friendly features and accessibility, according to New Mobility magazine's guide.

The include the Paul Laurence Dunbar Library, the Lake Campus Library and Technology Center, the Student Technology Assistance Center (STAC), the Charles and Renate Frydman Educational Resource Center, and Special Collections and Archives.

Wright State University's is Dayton's premier sports and entertainment venue. The 11,200-seat arena is the official home of the NCAA Division I Wright State University men's and women's basketball and women's volleyball programs. It's a stopping point for national touring concerts and performances, including musicians from every genre, comedians, and worldrenowned family shows.

The , dedicated in 2016, is home to an award-winning motion pictures program. It houses a production studio, editing suites, a multipurpose classroom, a digital animation lab, and even a "green room" that serves as a lounge as well as a think tank where students can develop future film projects.

The , which opened in 2015, hosts the university's tutoring spaces, the University Writing Center and Math Studio, a 225-seat auditorium, and four active learning classrooms with laptops at every station. The (NEC) Building, which also opened in 2015, houses the collective brainpower of 30 top neuroscientist, engineers, clinicians, and their teams for pioneering research and medical breakthroughs.

The (VMC) serves Wright State's population of student veterans, guard/reservists, active duty and military-connected individuals. The VMC Student Center provides a USO-like atmosphere for military-connected individuals to recharge with a cup of coffee, free printing, or to study with peers in one of the private study rooms.

Off-Campus Opportunities

The presence of many industry and business partners means terrific internship, co-op, and graduate and undergraduate research opportunities for our students. Wright-Patterson Air Force Base and the Air Force Research Laboratory are right next door and many tech companies and defense-related contractors have an established presence in Dayton. More than 70,000 of Wright State's 120,000 alumni still live in the Dayton area, creating incredible networking opportunities.

What students say:

“WSU is primarily a commuter school,†although “there is campus housing†to accommodate roughly one-fifth of the student body. As a result, “most students come to campus for class and then leave,†resulting in “not a lot of campus life.†The campus is hardly dead, however. “There are athletic events to attend, a movie theatre and mall less than five minutes from campus, our creative arts college frequently puts on shows, several bars close by (but none on campus), bowling alleys, parks, soccer and softball fields within ten minutes from campus, and the school’s Nutter Center host many concerts and events,†including games for the school’s “very much supported†men’s basketball team. There are party scenes focused on both off-campus residences and a small but robust Greek community, but students assure us that this is “by no means a party school.â€

01. Overview

Graduate students comprise 19.7 percent of the student body and 26.6 percent of students are age 25 and older. More than 25 percent of Wright State students are first-generation college students.

There are more than 130 at Wright State in a diverse variety of interests, including academics, religion, Greek life, heritage and culture, professions, sports, and outdoor activities. The sports clubs include our men's bowling team, a perennial national tournament contender and the 2022 national club champions. Our team has earned top national awards for more than 40 years.
